OK..OK... so I scored in the 8% range on OFS. I obviously saw something more in my photo than y'all did, but I thought I would give you some explanations:

1. This is not my kid. I have no idea who she is.
2. This does not belong in a family album (See #1).
3. This was a street candid, taken at almost full zoom, from about 10 feet away. I had the flash on since I was in the shade.
4. She is not pouting, is not mad, and is not being "uncooperative." She is just sitting still while the face painter works. I didn't ask her to smile, to frown, or anything. She only saw my camera at the very second I clicked the shutter.
5. Her skin really is that color. She had been standing in line in 90 degree heat for 20 minutes to get her face painted.
6. If she were a supermodel with that same "pouty" expression it would have scored higher.

Now...I'll end my "rant" of sorts... I just thought you deserved an explanation after such a poor showing. :o)

Hi Laurie. I gave it a six or five. What I was dissappointed in is you posted a link in the forums to your smugbug account that had that picture in it. It always surprises me when I see the picture somewhere else before I see it in the contest but I didn't take any points away for it. And while I was thinking on that, I wondered why you didn't enter the picture of the girl in green. Nothing wrong with this one except the other one is extremely cute and people (forgive me about this but it has been proven) would be more likely to vote higher for cuteness.

Hello girlfriend!

Well, my comment was couched in "niceties" because I initially thought she must be related to you and didn't want to offend your feelings!

The fact that she isn't related to you doesn't make any difference to my feeling that this really is the kind of image only a mother could love/ that would be better received in a family album.

She may well be an attractive girl normally but this image doesn't really show her prettiness off very well nor does it offer something other else in the place of prettiness. Wrongly or rightly when I see a picture of someone I don't have a personal connection with I'm obviously going to be looking at it in a different way. Without the personal connection there's no reason for me to be interested in a kid who doesn't strike me as attractive OR in a kid who isn't doing something cute OR in a kid who isn't part of some scene that strikes me in some other way.

It may be the heat that made her skin red - but again the fact that there is a good reason for her to be red doesn't make it any more appealing that she is.

I'm not trying to be rude but just to try and explain further why I think this one didn't do very well at all. I suspect that a lot of people assumed she must be related to you because it struck a lot of people as the kind of image that a relative would see more appeal in than a stranger.

Hope my post isn't going to make you want to GRRR at me next time I see you in chat!

:o)

Hey, Laurie I just went to your smugmug album to see the little girl in green mentioned by someone else and ran across your threads photo. Wow! I thought I had such an original idea when I entered mine in the Implied Lines. Guess there really isn't anything new under the sun :-) Never could find the little girl in green, tho. I'll go back when I have some more time. I should be getting dressed for work right now!

Maybe my memory is faulty about the color(pretty sure she was in green), but there was a little girl that was just adorable and there were maybe three pictures of her.

I think it's a little too candid for dpc. Smiles and creamy smooth complexions do better with the voters. Parts of it look great to me, such as her hair, and her eyes; others parts look like the color is off somehow maybe oversaturated, such as the orange paint on her face and the burgundy on her shoukders. Focus and DoF are right on. Maybe a title that played upon her "bored" or "unhappy" expression would have pushed the score up a bit. Just my two cents.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.... I hope you don't think I'm whining or anything, because I knew from the beginning it wasn't any sort of contender or anything...I just thought I'd offer some more info so that you wouldn't think I was completely bonkers for posting such a shot for a free study. And Kavey...I'd never grrrrr at you because you are honest and that's a very endearing quality!!! (((((hug)))))

Here is the little girl in green, dipaulk and pcody... at least I think this is the one you are referring to. I didn't realize the shot I entered was still in there...normally I pull the one I use for a challenge but I guess I forgot! Oops... :o)

Thanks again for the feedback...after 57 challenges I should know better than to have entered that shot, but I guess that's just the rebel in me! ;o)
