Over the weekend I went to the Phoenix Botanical Garden with a few DPCers and my company photography club to hit the butterfly tent. I got the chance to try out my new close up filters a lot.

All can be viewed here:

Thanks in advance for any comments?

Hi Daryl, I feel the photos need a little more blur on the background, pusshing the details away... The butterfly pictures are nice, but details in the background takes some effect away.
I like #12 the most

I agree with gaurawa. A polarizer or maybe a diffuser held over the butterfly (good luck not scaring them off) would have benefitted the shots. Still, the colors are really punchy and would likely print out very nicely.

Cool. #12 is indeed the best. Otherwise i agree that dof should be a little shallower.

Here is a couple of mine:

These are all lovely. I really like the blue ones. Do you have any closer shots of those?

Daryl...what stunning images! I try and try to get decent butterfly shots but they're just too fast for me. Lovely color, sharp details, and nice composition in the ones you've posted. I'm in agreement about the DOF, but they are still beautiful! Thanks for sharing! :o)

Thanks all for the feedback. I was using my close-up filters for the first time and had been told that they result in a real shallow DOF, so I was trying to get a deeper DOF. I guess I went too deep.

Laurie, these were taken in a butterfly tent. they have hundreds of butterflies in there and people walk through all day so they are pretty use to people and cameras.

PS there are two DPCers in the photos, any guesses?

I like the 10th one the best - the background is the cleanest and you've got it nice and sharp.

It can be tough to get the right DoF for butterflies - to get a clean background while enough detail through the depth of the wings.

Couple of recent ones I've taken

Still haven't got any good Monarch shots though - so I'm really jealous of yours.

i read that there is a shortage of monarchs this year.

a combination of a cold snap in mexico earlier, and a very wet and cool summer season to the north. less migrated north this year, and then food supplies ( milk weed ) came too late for the trip back. many died.

something along those lines anyway.

That unfortunately seems to be an increasing trend. Along with increasing destruction of their habitat in Mexico and climate shift futher impacting the breeding regions.

Here are some of my butterfly pictures, taken earlier this month in Santa Cruz:
