It was my wife's birthday today. I gave her a Sun Conure (a type of bird related to the parrot family).

Must be a baby with all of those green feathers still. Hope you got a hand fed bird.

Yup, he's only about 4 months (I don't know the exact date of birth). They recommended we continue the hand feeding for a few more months.

He's *really* cuddly. He likes to snuggle up against the side of your head, and he loves to playfully nibble on your ear. We're really impressed with this bird. My wife has wanted a bird like this since she was a teenager and this one just seems perfect.
He was a surprise gift... It's my wife's 40th birthday. I thought of the black balloons, reading glasses, hair coloring and other fun stuff. Then I thought... rather than make her feel bad about getting older, I'll let her feel young again by giving her something she's wanted for so long.

I'll tell you this much... it has sure lifted her spirits. She has seemed kinda down lately, but she's all smiles today.

Great idea. Beautiful bird!
I don't know if you've had birds before, but make sure the bird get's held by both of you. I have a cockatiel, but he seemed to only be comfortable when I held him, and it only got worse as time went on. So in retrospect, we should have kept "forcing" him to acclimate to others.
And he was never comfortable being touched by anything but my face/beard. He loved to get rubbed by my beard and he would do something like your photo three--flip his head over, and just go into "seventh heaven" when I did that.
But again, we made a mistake. While he'll sit on your hand, or shoulder, he won't let us touch his body with our hands (e.g., to pet him). In the end, his behavior (and the fact that we got a dog after 1 year of having him), means he stays in the cage most the time now.
One interesting (good) thing we taught him, was--are you ready for this--to poop on command (it's not hard to train this since they do it so often!). The reason we did that was to get him to go before we picked him up, that would buy us more time while we held him before he went on us! Cockatiels, at least, go about every 10-15 minutes!
Anyway, I think birds are great, and it looks like you have a great one there!

There are few material things in life which bring as much joy and satisfaction as 'the perfect gift' to express your love for somebody.
Congrats and happy birthday to your wife! |

You're right, I'm new to this. I had so many questions, it took a couple of hours before I managed to bring the bird home.
I *really* appreciate your advice. Thanks!

Ummm.... yeah. I don't know that the name really "fits". But she named him Oscar.
I guess the trouble is, I keep thinking of the breed of fish called "oscar" whenever she says the name. My aunt had an oscar and had named it Oscar, so there's good reason for the association...

The person I work with who got one last year couldn't understand why when his wife gave the bird so much attention, when he came home the bird made a lot of noise until he acknowledged him. My sister who has birds told me to tell him he is like a 'baby", in other words, he wants attention from everyone in the family, much like a child getting excited when their other parent comes home!

I have 3 teenagers at home and they were all "ga ga" over the new addition to the family as well. Right now I'm a little worried about "too much" attention. But I get your point. I think the key, then, is to make sure he doesn't just get left alone after the newness wears off, and to make sure he remains a "part" of the family.

Awwwwghh a sun conure, congrats! Wait another year and she will be whistleing and almost saying a few words. Or squaking so loud waking you up at the crack of day. :)
I had a nanday conure, dusky pioness, and bluemask lovebird. The nanday said hello, shutup Tipper(because we told him that sometimes when he squaked) the pioness said all kinds of things but she was abused before I got her so she got to be unmanageable. I gave them all to 1 family when I started technical school.
They are a lifetime committment and there are to many things that you cant use or have in their environment.
Goodluck, you are lucky to get her so young adapting and learning will be quick...
