Two suggestions:
1. Use ISO dates (yyyy-mm-dd) rather than mm/dd/yy. As a European, Im always using the dd-mm-yy format, and fing the US format confusing. This may head off problems in the future if you decide to start running elite competitions over longer periods (to that 4th March and 3rd May dont get confused)

2. Two of my 3 entries have had to be cropped awkwardly because of the 640x480 requirement. Why not just have it so that one dimension has to be 640 and the other dimension 640 or less. Then I can crop to make to image look right, rather than just fulfil an arbitrary ratio. You could drop the file size to 120kb to counterect people submitting 640x640 photos.

both very good ideas. i know the fixed file ratio has been discussed many times before, but i'll agree with it again, anyway. it would be very helpful (and in my opinion not detract from the intent of the challenges) to limit the maximum length only. for the texture challenge especially, i think we would've seen some very interesting square submissions.

This is good point. Taking the "perfect" photo and then having to fit it into a predefined space can be limiting.

A length limit and one direction and file size limit overall would seem to be an equitable solution. However, having dozens of varying file dimensions would be tough to administrate.

I strongly agree with both suggestions.

How does dropping the file size to 120kb counteract having a dimension of 640 x 640? I don't really care what the dimensions end up being but I don't think it would be a good thing if we went lower then 150kb.

Opening up the number of dimensions has been discussed numerous times, and I feel (as always) that the possibilies currently allowed are just enough.

An opening up of dimensions is an opening up of the aspect ratios allowed-- and when you get to that point the aspect ratio used becomes more and more a focal point of the image instead of the actual content of the image.

Some might find the current restrictions limiting, but they are common restrictions to all and ensure (IMHO) a more level playing field.

In terms of date formats, I think no matter what date format used you'll find that some percentage of users will find it confusing. The only possible solution I see is being able to change the date format in each user's Preference screen... so each user can see their dates in a format they're used to.

Is it really that hard to figure out that mm means month, dd means date, and yy means year? What difference does it really make what order it is in? No matter what order it whas in, I would still take a moment to make sure it was correct. So what is the difference?

I would appreciate it if the size limitation could be raised. 200kb is reasonable, as for those with dial up (56k) browse at work, or get in with the "something new" dsl or cable. ANYTHING lower than 150kb is very noticable...

Its a standard usability issue, presenting data in this way causes user errors, which may come around to bite someone if dpchallenge starts running long competitions, especially if there is money involved.

E.g. What are the legal implications if dpchallenge allows my 3rd March photo to win the 4th May competion, and I get the 100 dollar prize. The issue becomes moot if ISO dates are used, as they cannot be confused with US and European standards.
