*shrug* If a photo is good enough to speak for itself, it doesn't need a title. Actually, i think you are undermining some of your photos by giving them titles. Yes, it may be a a girl on the beach, and if you call it that, that's what it's going to be. But if you don't, people will have to think about it, and it just may associate with morning freshness, or running or good time or something else, trigger feelings.

I agree with you about titles. I would like to see a challenge where titles are prohibited. Most of the time I don't read titles.

There's another thread on the 'titles' issue, but I think titles can be an important part of the work...for better or for worse.

I agree... Would the "Mona Lisa" be as timeless a painting if it was titled "Woman with Nice Smile"? or "***"? I believe the title is every bit as much a part of an artwork as the colors, composition, etc...

ahh another thread to put on the ignore list.....

I'm waiting for GeneralE to post in reply to this...he will once again correct the name of that painting!

That would include me (though I gave your shot a 5). I don't curse either (except maybe in the context of a joke). That's not sainthood, it's common manners, and would I hope that there are more than 64 such people around here.

Um... no it doesn't. Ignoring a thread hides it completely, so you'd have to go out of your way to view it again, and I doubt that happens very often.

A technically perfect shot that meets the challenge does NOT guarantee a good score. Take a look at the Habits challenge. I believe the highest-scoring photo of someone actually picking his nose or biting her nails got a 5.3 (and there were many such entries). A 1 does not mean that the voter interpreted your image as a personal attack or that it didn't meet the challenge. Note that all three ribbon-winers received votes below 3. We are free to vote as we see fit, and some people will give you a 1 or 2 simply for lack of taste or personal appeal. Remember that your audience here includes people of all ages, countries and backgrounds (children, nuns, cab drivers, etc.). In another country or culture, that gesture might be completely meaningless and therefore not meet the challenge. I think the otherwise-normal voting bell curve from 2-10 on your entry shows that the overwhelming majority of votes are fair and considered.

On the upside....I placed in the top 10 with the 'shot' ....so I guess I'm the lucky one! and I got, 5x1's and 9x10's.

Yeah. The context in your shot helped enormously by showing the situation.

I think the shot was fine...I'm not going to bother reading the whole thread but I hope nobody marked it down because they were offended.

Everyone who gave me an honest mark, even if it's not high, i am not talking about you either. I am not complaining about not getting a high enough mark, i am complaining about not getting an honest treatment here.

People who did not like your shot gave you a one, how more honest could they have been? It's not the gesture per se it's the photo that they did not like. Gil P had a photo with the same gesture and he placed 9th overall.

And i just don't think this is worth the effort. Because my night shot image (albeit it's not very good) will get voted down at least by some because [etc etc]

And the education entry [title removed] is going to get voted down because republicans who oh are offended with the finger picture so much are proably not gonna get the reference to [what my picture is about]. Even though i went to great lengths [executing my photo]

What kinda crap is that? How can you tell who is a Republican or not? This is an international site where the people from outside the USA outnumber Americans. Again Gil P placed 9th with the finger, should I believe that "Republicans" did not vote on his picture? C'mon Grow up.

Have a nice life, everyone.

PS I don't care if the last two images are going to get disqualified for being mentioned here, obviously.

Have a nice life and leave if you can't take it. That sounds extremely immature IMHO. People did not like your photo, so live with it, they gave you their honest opinion, so take it like a grownup.

I'm sure some did..I got my share of 1's too...but this is the whole idea..if there was not "shock" value to imagery there would be no difference between showing a child holding a flower and the same child holding a grenade... I expect and accept the fact that some people respond well and others respond not so well to my proposal...

In the end, the best learning I've done on DPC is to learn what is "mass apeal"...something I still struggle with.

I assure you on this site, the child with the flower would receive many more 1's...

Why do you presume the votes were due to the finger? when another image of exactly the same message and idea doesn't receive any way near the amount of 1's 2's & 3's surely you should start looking at the photo as a downfall rather than it's message.

You are a fool, Jonpink. Just like everyone else, you don't recognise great art when it is right in front of you!!! It has to be the message.

I used this form of communication yesterday as a car raced up a residential street filled with children... and yes I did retract it before the children turned their heads to see who was screaming "slow down".

Shoot to please yourself or paying clients, not the members of DPC. Use DPC to share and to learn from the photographers that you respect and are willing to share their perspective. Don't worry about the rest of the noise. And... if you happen to get a lot of ones for a technically good photograph, then sit back and enjoy that fact that your image succeeded in communicating with it's audience.

i feel like doing it all the time, but that kind of stuff will get you shot around here, so i just effectively yell through my window. :)

A little sanity has found its way into this thread.

I didn't really understand all the funk in this thread. So I started at the beginning...

1) Most people showed empathy for the finger-photographer.
2) One or two disagreed.
3) Finger-photographer wouldn't let that happen and reacted harshly, making assumptions as he went along.
4) People got pissed and this thread went to hell.
