I am a little surprised by the score (5.2) of my submission "Tulip Abstraction" for the cliche challenge. Personally I like this shot and I expected a score above 6. You can feel my pain last monday, when my first score was 4.3 :-). But what happened? Is this only an average shot, or does it meet the challenge not very well (...)? As I wrote already in my photo details I decided to choose an unusual perspective and a special lighting. I wanted to show a uniqe photo of the very common and cliche subject "flowers". What is your opinion, what went wrong or does shit happens ;-)?

Thanks a lot for your effort

nds, my friend, I think it was just a bad time to be original....

I'm by no means an expert on photography, but I'll give you my two cents on your picture - This will give you an insight on what a novice might see in this (and there seems to be a lot of novices like me on DPC, in my opinion).

The main thing that comes to mind is that your picture is an abstract. IMO, for an abstract to draw some decent attention, it needs to have some kind of texture, colour, pattern or contrast that stands out for it to "say" something. I believe the reason why your picture scored lower than you expected is because the picture doesn't offer much in terms of those attributes. The colour is a little "cool", the texture(s) need to be somehow amplified. Because of this, I voted this a 6.

Although it wasn't a factor for me when I voted, I would guess that a lot of people voted the picture down because they didn't associate your abstract with the common clichés that have been posted in other challenges since your abstract is rather original. I think for this challenge there was a fine line between "being original" and "not meeting the challenge", in the eyes of the average voter. In your case, the balance might have tipped the wrong way. In fact, considering myself as someone who enjoys shooting original pictures more than anything else, that was the reason why I didn't submit to that challenge.

Hope this helps,

calaille

Have to agree this shot isn't a cliche. Infact it is quite the opposite. I have never seen a flower presented like this before. Where the subject is a cliche the image isn't. Look at the top 3 - They not only are shot really well they are also of themes we see hundreds of times. A water drop/chess board, a snowy peak and a rose. Oh man, ad nauseum... LOL. Calaille put it best, it was a bad time to be original.

Thanks a lot for your comments! Maybe you are right and the subject wasn't cliche enough. I interpreted the challenge title a little different than most of the other photographers. "Pick a common photography subject, and take the best photo you can" means to me, that the subject has to be cliche (flower), but the photo should be different and somehow unique.

I liked your picture. I thought it was interesting. I definetely think it got scored low for not being cliche. I think my picture had the same problem, but I'm not sure. I didn't care for this challenge much. Better luck to all of us creative folk next time!

I liked your picture and scored it a 6. I agree that it is a cliche subject. For me it didn't detract from the score that you shot the picture in an original way, but for the majority of the voters I agree with the others that they didn't perceive it as a cliche.

Ditto except I gave you a 7.

nds,
I gave it an 8. I was happy to see a cliche subject photographed with originality. I would have scored it higher with a warmer tone than you chose. I learned to enjoy my photos regardless of my score here.
learn what you can from the comments, enjoy your hobby, and let go of the rest!

I didn't rate the cliche challenge, but I'm so happy that you brought this photo to my attention. I miss out on all the weird and funky low-scoring photos in the open challenges because I just don't have time to vote. This is the kind of thing I'll be ordering prints of when we have that ability. I hope I can have one!

Edit: By the way, my photo kind of had the same problem. The title was misleading, it's obviously not just another sunset photo. People couldn't identify the structures in it (they're cranes for loading and unloading shipping containers) and many thought the clouds were actually waves!

i understand how you feel, nds. my photo didn't do as well as i thought it would. it was my first challenge entry, though...guess i still have a lot to learn.

what i'm most disappointed about is the lack of comments. the votes on my photo ran the gamut from four 1's and seventeen 2's to one 10. how am i supposed to know what made the photo bad or good if no one comments?

oh well...maybe next challenge. i just want to learn all i can.

thanks to all who commented on my photo...i appreciate it very much!

take care

lisae: that was yours! lol. I think I left a funny comment on it. I was only kidding of course but I thought other people would get confused. I liked it a lot.

sher: I like your picture a lot. You probablly got scored low because of the fact that the picture is snapshotish. People are looking for really professional looking shots the types of which they would find in calendars for this challenge I think. I will say that I'm sorry I didn't get around to critiquing it, but I'll try now. I like the idea a lot but am dissapointed in not being able to see your sons face. I also don't like that the hat and arm are cut off. Also, the lighting is off and it looks like you may have used flash. Its tough to get good looking natural lighting in doors without setting it up a bit. The background and scene in general are excellent and have a homely and humorous feeling. Don't be discouraged. You just picked a hard challenge for a first entry. It's only my second though so I really have no idea what I'm talking about :)

Sher,
I just looked a your cliché photo (I gave it a 5) and I like every thing but the lighting. To me flash photos just scream snap shot. This same pose taken near a window or outside in a park would have scored much better. Keep at it!

I can't tell you what happened nds... See that lonely little 10? That was from me. I thought it was fantastic.

nds your photo rocks. The crisp focus, the golden tones, that grid that blurs to the background from the lower right hand corner are all great. I would have given it a 10 but I didn't have time to vote on everyone's photo.
