Has anyone had any prints done on metal?
If so, how did you like the quality? Where did you buy them? What finish did you choose?

Quite a few have, most have been happy with it. Someone (I think Brent_S) had a big print job fairly recently on metal.
Personally, I've only printed to metallic paper, which gives a great effect with the right subject ... |

I searched for "metal print" before I posted for help.
Do you remember where you saw it, Gen??

I sell quite a few 20"x30" prints on aluminum high gloss. These are an important part of my business plan.
It takes an image which is enhanced by the presentation, like .
The company is Meridian Pro, from Parsons, KS. They are very good and I highly recommend.
Meridian Pro has Chromaluxe metal prints on sale in October.
Metal prints larger than 20x30 do not have a market opportunity for me because of the cost and difficulty in handling. If I wanted really big aluminum prints, I'd choose Bay Photo.

Maybe too specific a search ... I think the ones I meant are among the first few listed on this page of search results for "metal" (limited to the past 3 years) ...
As Richard said, you want to make sure the image will benefit from that treatment -- I'd lean toward sharp, contrasty, saturated images ... the one I'd print that way has lots of metal in it and (metallic paper) makes it look very real ...

Their sample pack (same 5x7 image on each of five surfaces) for $35 looks like a good deal ...
Which surface do you use most often? |

I have someone who wants my Human Hand entry printed and framed. I thought it would look best on metal... but I'm REALLY open to other ideas.

Square on metal might be a problem, Lydia. Not sure.
You can look at FineArtAmerica. You can become a member for free and then upload up to 25 images for sale. Since you only want this one, that should be adequate. I got a metal print from them and was quite satisfied. But I don't think it was as shiny as what Richard is describing. Thing is, they do any shape or size. You might also look at their acrylics. That would be very slick (literally and figuratively). |

GS (Glossy Standard). To me, that means High Gloss with white background.

I wish they didn't print the surface type on the front of the image. *sigh*

Thanks, Nikki! I'm going now to check them out.
Most of the places I've looked at so far have square crops as standard.

I print exclusively on metal or canvas. I've been using Bay Photo and they are REALLY great to work with. You can get a custom size/shape, but that's pricey. But square crop is definitely one of the standard sizes.
I'll have to check out Richard's printers. |

Because of this thread I just ordered a small aluminium Dibond print from Whitewall to see what their quality is like - will let you know in 10 days or so. |

I have been using Bay Photo for mine.. very reasonable for metal prints and great finishes!
I have not heard of the one Richard has been using and they are cheaper! Thank you for that Richard!

I haven't ordered from these folks before but I saw some sample work and it looked really good. They're pretty new to the US scene. https://us.whitewall.com/
For the Zebra print, I think it'd look really good face mounted as well. The print is usually sandwiched between a nice plexi(or lexan maybe) and sintra(or dibond) . Will give a nice clean high art look to it. Worth considering.

Lydia, just been back to the UK version of Whitewall and they do a *FREE* trial pack. Not sure of sizes but it is *FREE* with just a few $'s in postage.
Plus, if someone where to recommend you you would get £10 (in the UK) off your first purchase. Techo might have to recommend you (then you could both send me $5 lol). |

Also what's not clear is if they're printing samples of your image on all the materials, or just using a stock image. |

I was at Photo Plus in NYC last year. They had a really impressive booth there, especially for first time exhibitors. I'll probably be going again this year, it's in a few weeks. If I get any coupon codes, I'll post some here. I mostly go to see any new printing tech and get some sample and swatch books. This year I hope to see some new display technology. At an Art Expo there was this gentleman who painted the most amazing life like animal portraits with a black background. Looked amazing face mounted. |

For the *FREE* pack it's just stock images, you'd have to order the smallest prints if you used your own image. I do hope they use the same image for better comparison - I'll update when they arrive. |

All that black on a high-gloss surface would turn into an instant mirror. If I was printing your Human Hand, I'd pick a matte finish on stretched canvas.
[eta] Congrats on the interest in your print!
