My wife and I have raised our kids to understand the âdigital tattooâ they get with every post, tweet, and message they send. They know full well that once they hit post or send, it's permament. Now weâre talking about the âdigital torpedoââ¦
Not sure if this hit many of your newsfeeds, but for obvious reasons itâs been front-page stuff here in Richmond. Basically, he got drunk, sent some stupid texts, and has subsequently lost his job as Athletic Director for the University of Minnesota (I knew him when he was the AD at VCU).
The news is here.
(If you google around (teague sbnation), you can find the lurid NSFW details.)
The long and short of it is that no one is safe from themselves when they choose to make stupid decisions. Prior to âtodayâs technologyâ, people could more easily get away with bad and stupid behaviors. Today, though, you can completely destroy your entire career with a few short texts. Of course, you know this; itâs just a matter of figuring out how to teach your kids this lesson without them having to learn it the hard wayâ¦
That's my PSA for the day. Return now to your regularly scheduled programming.

Texting stupid things was less of an issue than his attitude toward women. Even after being caught he seems to want to put the blame on his drinking problems, he has much deeper issues to deal with. |

the way i see it, people used to be able to get away with easily hiding their prejudges, biases and bigotry. they aren't afforded that option any longer and the world will be better for it.

Before digital torpedoes, he would have been allowed a certain amount of collateral damage as long as he was a success in the job they hired him for, as long as he didn't pick on the daughter of a man more powerful than he, then he would've been quietly promoted out of harms way. As it is, as soon as the dust settles, it seems they are going to hire him back as an expensive consultant. Women: be warned. |

The digital age has allowed the knee-jerk (or maybe just the jerk)reaction to replace common sense. |
