I have recently noticed that I am cropping more and more photos into square shape, and I really like that form. It often frames the subject better than normal rectangular form.
Here is an example:

I also find the more rectangular view somewhat more 'distracting' if you know what I mean.

I really like the square crop, too! My portfolio and contest entries will show you what I mean... when I look around my apartment, I can see why-- I just like the even square shape! :)

I agree, I also find myself trying to fill up a rectangle with shots that fit a square much better.

BTW, this is my first post. I think this is a really cool place and I plan on participating in the next open challenge.

I like the square crop too, but if you think about it it takes away from the composition rules. I still like the rect. feel to a photo. You can get more creative with the shape. Instead of cropping to get the look you want, try taking the picture with the rect. shape and see how that comes out.

Just as a side note: I've heard that square images don't sell much. I wonder if that's true. Anyone know?

Iused to shoot an old mamiya tlr camera that shot 6x6 images, and I LOVED them! I think a square crop can add to a great eye. Great job, and don't worry too much about criticisms. People have narrow minds, and a vision of how a photo conforms to a format, without admiring the design.

yes they do! I have 4 on my wall. They were under $20 each and take 8.5x8.5,8x10, or 8.5x11 pics matts included. I got them from my camera shop.

It is definitely a nice creative option to consider. I had a portrait I took yesterday that I was really feeling was a blah shot as i couldn't quite crop it the way I envisioned it until I tried a square crop on it and it popped for me. I'll post it at a future date as it was taken in the same series as a shot I have submitted for a challenge.

I seem prefer it to the slightly off-square look you often get from the digital format. I've recently left a few comments suggesting it as a possible improvement to the existing crop.

I most often end up cropping to a 3:2 or square format; even when I do the crop "freehand" it usually ends up within a few pixels of these ratios.

I have to agree. And when I looked through your (Jonr) gallery, I saw that Patio is a good example of this. It's also a wonderful shot :)
