The story behind the shot

Oo this would most certainly explain the compression and the size of the moon. The visible stars are from a different exposure. Hmmm. Maybe it IS 2 shots...

I enjoyed watching that moon-rising video at the link (says "A moonrise unlike any you've ever seen")

Thanks, Jon. You sent me back to that moonrise video.

It funny. There have been other threads on other sites having the exact same discussion. Someone else pointed out that not only is it two exposures (evidenced by the details of the press release), but also two lenses because Canon's 800mm lens is an f/5.6 and doesn't go down to f/2.8.

+ Exposures f/11 @ 1/250 second and f/2.8 @ 20 seconds

Forensic analysis of photography is a healthy exercise. It makes us all better informed and more knowledgeable photographers.

So far, the weather has dealt me lemons in my quest for a challenge entry. The trite saying comes to mind.

Guess I'll try to capture tonight's full moon as it comes over the mountain ridge through the Belt of Venus. ;-)

Any full moons in this challenge would be a bit suspicious since the next full moon is supposed to be Jan 4th. lol

The best reference: USNO

If you get out early tomorrow you can catch the moon on the same side of the sky as the sunrise.

3:35 AM when the waning crescent rises, not even allowing for the mountains blocking it until later. BUSTED :-)

That's a very nice resource you posted, Richard. Weather's not cooperating here either, but I do have a fall-back panorama that, while not especially Lik-Like, is still my first true landscape panorama :-)

Seems somewhat relevant to the conversion. Happened on the link by accident on one of my morning surfs. Moonwalk. Shot at 1600mm.

My Lik challenge entry has been submitted. The one time panorama allowance is much appreciated. Mine was assembled from five vertically oriented images overlapped about 30%. My computer struggled at the stitching task, but the final image is okay.

I have a back up ready - 9 images but I cropped one or two off later. Subject is amazingly dnmc - hoping the fact that it's a pano will help??

You can hope. I'm in the same boat here, weather is totally shut down, but I do have a pano ready as a fallback.

Spent a while out tonight shooting panos and a little light painting but I don't think I'll use any of the shots.

Panoramas sure take a while when you do 15 or 25 seconds per frame... Maybe I'll go shoot in the daytime for once... pigs will fly!

Well, this is a FAR superior image to Lik's in just about every way....

About to go out and attempt to get something for this challenge, hopefully the weather is ok. See you all on the voting block!

bad weather here in Taiwan... I've been a whole day in the mountains but didn't get any decent shot.

Got a couple of them tonight which I am happy with.

I'm having trouble deciding between the wide pano and long pano, though.

Anyone willing to take a look and help me decide?

Damn, didn't have time this week to shoot much. Not sure I'll get one in this challenge.
12/21/2014 12:23:47 AM · #170
Heavy cloud cover literally all week - added to a location where there is NO "scenery". I don't think my place holder will get the brown, but I could be wrong.

Posted mine yesterday, then posted a different one today, then reposted the first one. I can't decide... Probably means I didn't hit the mark with either of them (or, less likely, I have two blues on my hands).

For what it's worth (nothing really) I live within walking distance of one of Peter Lik's galleries and have visited at least a half dozen times just to appreciate how fine they look in person. Nothing pushy about the staff who all know I am there because I am an amateur photographer who likes Lik's stuff. They're happy to chat with me and talk about Lik's and their own photography.

I like landscape photography a lot. There's absolutely nothing edgy about me or my photographs. I just like attractive, well-made images.

I also frequent the local contemporary art museum from time to time to get my social/art fix.

Finally, I have just made a panorama landscape that is a limited edition of one that will go on sale for $6.6 million after the challenge is finished. Don't let the low DPC vote for this image scare you away if you want to (a) own the most expensive photograph in history (to date) and (b) have the distinction of "discovering" a previously unknown and little admired photographer. (My mother likes my stuff. She's 95 years old, bless her heart.)

Delightful post, chalice. Thanks. Although we are still solidly overcast, it's supposed to get up to 40 degrees F (4.4 C) so maybe, just maybe I'll give it one more shot :)

I knew Chalice when... LOL
