Pure genius just the act of turning the art world on it's head is what's going to justify it's value.
The image that "shook the world".
I'm very far from being and art expert but I have a feeling that in the past any new type of art style was treated in a similar way. I have a feeling this is par for the course. |

I'm looking everywhere for The Onion icon, as this is 100% their style, but I can't find it anywhere.
I laughed quite a bit, but most especially at two lines:
"More painfully, the image in question is believed to be overly sentimental and picturesque, two qualities thought to be safely weeded out of officially certified fine art after years of struggle"
and
"By encouraging the lower classes to believe they might be artistic, Lik’s sale is thought to be a dangerous provocation."
Thank you very much for sharing this! :) |

You know, once the photographer sells the photo the first time, they don't receive any more money when it is resold to some investment banker for 20 tiems the original price ... and for some strange reason, DPC Prints won't let me price a photo at $5 million ... :-( |

Very clever. I'm sure no one needed this note at the bottom of the article to recognize the deliberate humor, but just in case . . .
"Editor’s note: As with Jeff Frost’s “press release” published earlier today, this article is a tongue-in-cheek take on current events." |

Here's an idea - how about one of our Site Council send an email to Mr. Lik to invite him to join and enter the challenge?
I wonder how a real photo of his might fare in a challenge in his style. |

Ansel Adams didn't do so well I can't see Lik doing any better. |

It would only work if he entered under a pseudonym ... |

MOST of us use pseudonyms here :-) Or is your name really "General Eclectic"? |

He'd have to get crackin' and go out and shoot, to meet the date limitations :-) |

It would be too funny if we all made comments like fawning art critics.
[eta]
oh & BTW it amuses me every time I read 'composted' when the writer seems to mean 'composited.' Not that composited is a real word. Or is it?
[eta]
Yes, I'm still reading up on Mr. Lik. It seems his compositions are 'composted' from up to 50 separate shots. We will show him a thing or two, when we are able to achieve the same fantasy color effect with only the 10 shots allowed here.
[ETA]
Reading a comment section discussing a Lik photo of the night sky, one photog described how he did night skies, in a process that included a motorized equatorial mount & 800 separate photographs. Holy cow! I am learning all kinds of things.

Yeah, I think we have all received your message that you are unhappy, cynical and skeptical. Maybe you can relax the animosity for long enough to make a good faith effort in shooting for this challenge. |

Well I am amused that all of you who do not care for fantasy art compositions seem to be very OK with Mr Lik's portfolio. I will shoot for this challenge if I can figure out how to do it. That's why I'm doing all this reading. It's very interesting.
I am amused, doubtful of my own skill set being equal to this challenge, & very interested to be voting on it. I will look with interest for yours, Mr. Hahn, after voting is done. [eta to clarify]

Guys, calm down. Richard, Pixelpig's well within acceptable norms here, if she wants to make fun of Mr Lik, that's perfectly OK. Meanwhile, "Annie" (don't know if that's your real name), let's not muddy the waters by insinuating that you'd keep an eye out for a particular image in voting. I'm sure you meant you'd look with interest to see what Hahn23 had entered after the voting was done, but it's an easy statement to misunderstand.
Let's just all be civil with each other OK? |

A friend of mine from Sydney has this picture of Peter's in her living room, lighthouse since she bought it, it has more than quadrupled in value. She has no intention of selling it, although one day who knows if it's worth enough, it was a limited edition version.

The best part about the article in question is the people taking it seriously in the article comments. Hilarious!
I agree this is my favorite line: "More painfully, the image in question is believed to be overly sentimental and picturesque, two qualities thought to be safely weeded out of officially certified fine art after years of struggle."

fine art
noun
noun: fine art; plural noun: fine arts
1.
creative art, especially visual art, whose products are to be appreciated primarily or solely for their imaginative, aesthetic, or intellectual content.
emphasis mine, notice the "or" in the definition that it isn't inclusive of all three.
so i guess Peter Lik is fine art.

Yeah, and I'd say unless you have viewed the pieces in a Lik gallery or original works hanging in a home, etc... you can't really comment. The web does them no justice. Stand in front of a 7' x 15' "Allure" or really any other piece, printed on silver halide, under customized lighting ant tell me it isn't amazing, I'll hold out a mirror and tell you you are looking at a liar. |

some of the hoity toity art snobs may say its not intellectual or does anything to move photography forward, but his work is absolutely beautiful. He does a phenomenal job of capturing the beauty of urban and nature alike. i have no problem with dumbed down when it looks like that, if you think its glorified computer wallpaper, i'm fine with that, i'd love to have one hanging on my wall. |

Lik, seems like a nice enough guy and a very smart businessman. I used to watch his show on The Weather Channel, which is/was a fun watch, and I did stop by his gallery in NYC (Soho). Hope Mr. Lik is aware that we have a challenge running in his honor. Don't believe his style is distinct enough but will play along. As far color landscapes, I very much prefer Marc Adamus' work and variety of DPC photogs. Won't comment on the price of the sold photo. I'm still learning about the art world. Still not sure why a Gursky is sought after. Not sure why people like some of my own photos LOL.
