Has anyone used the canon compact macro lens? Wondering what the quality is like and if you like it? I think it's a 50mm

I use that :)
Very sharp, great lens. Focusing is a bit slow cos its not USM but I can't fault it :)

A few shots:

I have not used it, but I can recommend the Sigma 105 f2.8 macro. Jacko has great success with his Sigma as well.

I do know that the 50mm macro lens requires an adapter to get to 1:1 reproduction ratio, where the Sigma 105 and the Canon 100mm macro do not.

The longer macro lenses also give you increased working distances, so you don't have to get as close to your subject to get the same magnification. That may not be an issue with an inanimate object like a coin, but with insects, it can be.

The 100mm or 105mm macro lenses also make very nice portrait lenses.

The price difference is pretty hefty though!

The Sigma 105 lens is $369 at B&H, the Canon 100mm is $449.

The Canon 50mm macro lens is $240 and the Lifesize converter is $242

The combo is well over the cost of the Sigma, and nearly the cost of the Canon 100mm macro.

Sigma also makes a 50mm macro that does go to 1:1 without an adapter for $249, which may also be a good alternative.

I just picked up a Sigma 105 barely used for about $175. I really like it so far and am very glad it goes all the way to 1:1. I haven't had it long, but it seems like a nice, reasonably priced alternative that takes pretty sharp pictures. Here are a few pics I took today:

Here's one at 1:1.
