Thought I'd share a picture of a small sneaker wave I came across during my shooting for the Masters' challenge (or maybe it came across me). I was shooting a feature called Thor's Well on Cape Perpetua early in the morning and had perched myself upon a rocky section which was probably two feet above the waterline (Thor's Well is located on a rocky shelf rather than out deeper water). I had the wireless trigger locked and was snapping pictures when I saw the wave was going to be bigger than usual. I decided to just hang on and hold everything down. The water made it up to my knees but never dislodged me (or my tripod). I doubt I was in any particular danger other than some possible scrapes and another story of a lost camera, but it still instills a reminder about respecting the ocean.
The camera captured the wave as it was still shooting. I think posthumous would think it was my best shot of that day.
The show the difference, this is the same vantage without the wave (and was my original entry to the challenge before I changed to something with a human element).

Hmm, that doesn't show? Maybe it only shows because I'm logged into my smugmug. Let me see. |

OMG...I love it!!!
When I was there it was sunset, and I forgot to turn off my VR on my lens (which was on a tripod)...I was never more frustrated to find out that NONE of my photo's came out at all...The wind there on that point is totally amazing....almost blew my camera and tripod over a couple of times....

Jason just how far away from the edge of the Well were you? I was up on the walk way...maybe that was just to far away (remember I'm short!!!) |

Here's a shot from my visit using a 10-20mm. What would you guess my distance was, given the focal length? 15 feet maybe, give or take a couple feet? DrAchoo's looks like he may have been a wee closer, but standing in almost exactly the same spot.
When I went, I was a dumbfounded by how close you could get. There's no fences to prevent you from walking into the well and jumping in if you want. People were being downright stupid. Fer Pete's sake, it's a massive hole in the earth with zillions of pounds of water trying to push you in. AND, they were in my way! The big rock in the bottom right corner of both of our shots was the sensible place to stand/sit and still get a good photo.
