Although date/time may update automatically in many cameras, the copyright notice metadata field typically is fixed text that needs editing/updating at the start of each year. I would have forgotten that for who knows how long except for getting an emailed reminder from the controlledvocabulary blog feed. Common enough issue to share here. Happy New Year. |

There's a copyright metadata field?

It's in File > File Info if you use PhotoShop. The camera doesn't do it, you do. Whatever editing /managing tool you use has an option to add metadata. |

In Apple's Aperture:
Aperture>>Presets>>Metadata>>IPTC status>>copyright
© YourNameHere 2014
On import, this info will be added to camera generated metadata.
One note: Some metadata is more invulnerable than other metadata. The © persists when "save for web" is used.

some cameras have the ability to set the copyright info inside the camera so that it is embedded into the image file. if your camera has custom menu functions, check it out. |

AFAIK all Canon camera have an "Owner" field in the EXIF data, which can be accessed with their ZoomBrowser program; I put a copyright symbol and my mailing address in there, but without a date (which is not necessary, and is listed elsewhere in the EXIF):

The example given by the US Copyright Office shows the copyright symbol, then the year, then the name of the copyright owner.
"Example © 2012 Jane Doe"
Putting a full and correct copyright notice into a work may give extra protection in case of legal dispute:
"Use of the notice informs the public that a work is protected by copyright, identifies the copyright owner, and shows the year of first publication. Furthermore, in the event that a work is infringed, if the work carries a proper notice, the court will not give any weight to a defendant’s use of an innocent infringement defense—that is, to a claim that the defendant did not realize that the work was protected. An innocent infringement defense can result in a reduction in damages that the copyright owner would otherwise receive." Interestingly, for some nonvisual works (audio recordings, for example) the "c" inside a circle symbol is not correct. There is a lot of freely available official information, although maybe more than some would want to know:

The underlying song would still use the "circle-c" symbol, while the audio recording itself would use a similar "circle-p" symbol.
Note that I am not including the date in my EXIF notice since the photo is not being "published" at that time, the date is in another field in the same metadata, and it's not strictly necessary, and giving someone the ability to contact me for permission seems more useful; when I prepare a print I do print the date in the border. |

Thanks. I've looked at this and I think I might need to be walked through filling it all out.

You can save the File Info as a small data file, so you can load up all the standard info ahead of time.
Most of the fields are self-explanatory -- I don't use them all, as some are meant for use by news services and not relevant. Let me know (here or by PM) if you have specific questions. |

I found a document which seems to have a complete explanation of the IPTC fields for Photoshop CS5 and newer ... download at this URL:
//www.iptc.org/std/Iptc4xmpCore/1.0/documentation/Iptc4xmpCore_1.0-doc-CpanelsUserGuide_13.pdf
I'll post some screenshots later to show what I save as standard info, and what fields I ignore (up until now, anyway) -- also mine will show how it looks in older (pre-CS) versions of Photoshop.
More info and links at this page at the IPTC:

Thank you for that Skip. It is most useful. Can I say copyrighted when I haven't registered a copyright?

You, as maker of an image, have always the copyright. Even if not registered. You always have your original to proof it is made by your hand.
At least, that's how it works here in Belgium. I suppose this is likewise everywhere.
