one general comment: I hope all of you reverse the general trend at dpc of trying to create a consensus and instead each of you come up with very different and even conflicting notions of what a "photo essay" is. only one person gets the free membership. that is a long shot no matter what you do. so just have fun with it. I will be having fun with it, too, and will write a response to every photo essay, not to pick them apart, but to engage with them, to play on your terms and respect the effort you've put into it. I don't have a final list of judges yet, but I've asked people who like to write and respond to photographs, not just my favorite photographers.

Just Sayin' -- I am certainly not entertaining any notion or hope of winning the prize. And speaking only for myself, I am trying to figure out what is a photo essay only because I like to know what the rule is before I decide how to break it. If there is a consensus, it's good to know what it is so I can work against it. I like surprise. I would vote higher for surprise than for confirmation, if I was voting. Are you hoping that we will each work alone, uncontaminated by the ideas of others? That's how I usually work, so it's a treat finding out what others think & if that's going to happen it has to happen before the challenge because nobody's going to talk about it much afterward. Consensus conschmensus! I think you have nothing to fear from this direction! :)

Annie, think of what "essay" means and then run with it independently of what other people think.
essay:
1. a short literary composition on a particular theme or subject, usu. in prose and generally analytic, speculative, or interpretative.
a). a short literary composition on a single subject, usually presenting the personal view of the author.
b). something resembling such a composition: a photojournalistic essay.
2. anything resembling such a composition: a picture essay.
3. an effort to perform or accomplish something; attempt.

I think that the more we look now for examples the less we'll be able to compose something with our shots but I surely want some discussions on the posted essays.

I'm working on one. I have an idea, and am collecting things, not quite sure how it will pan out, but I'm having a good time. :)

Well, OK. I will stop trying to understand & concentrate on having fun. I suck at storytelling, probably nobody will see a story or essay in it but me. That would probably be true in any case.

I do really look forward to seeing what you all enter!

I'm in. I have my work cut out for me wading through my unorganized photo files but I think this will be fun. Thanks Don and Cory.

I've not created an essay for this side challenge, but have been having fun with a collaborative essay of sorts on my Facebook page. Not sure if you all can see it or not, but it's here. :-)

There's still time, Deb.

Meanwhile, I have got to say 'thank you' to posthumous for starting this side challenge.

For more years than I care to remember, I have written newsletters for photo clubs as well as other groups.
This should have been an 'easy' challenge for me. But, it turns out, no!
Enjoyable as the exercise is, I come back to my essay from a brief absence,
and find it necessary to prune and change the mode again and again.

Thanks for the bump, or I may have missed this.... I have no idea where to start, but would love to play.

On Monday I will start a new thread that is only for posting entries. Discussion can continue here.

Remember there is no date range restriction for photos. Have fun!

And fun it was! I'm ready to post. No idea if it's an essay, but it is what it is.
01/12/2014 06:18:45 PM · #65
I believe I'm in as well. This call for entries has happily coincided with a small project I've been working on...

I'm as ready as I'm going to be...
01/12/2014 08:18:58 PM · #67
Ok gonna give this a go too but just for fun and maybe a little for hopes to wear a blue shirt again :)

I'm committing to post a series - not much time to plan something "artistic" but will use shots taken more or less as a document on the street on a particular day.
I'm from the old school where a "photo essay" is a general term meaning a more expansive view than one photo can deliver. So, it can be a concentration of shots for any purpose at all. Of course, as with any "essay", the quality will ultimately be judged for its coherence, theme, message, or whatever, even as an abstract presentation.
My hope is that this idea would catch on and become a regular part of the dpc experience and even a regular challenge topic including relevant development to accommodate multiple entries for the topic.

Two words for mine ... cam-py!

The fun is about to begin! I look forward to seeing all the different entries & hope to gain a better understanding of 'photo essay' by commenting. I plan to report what I think I see, & my reaction to it, as soon as it's OK to comment..

I wanted to do this but life got in the way, but I will be commenting on all the entrants.

Uh-oh. I'm rereading and I think the deadline might be tonight and not tomorrow (Tuesday)night. Don, can you clarify?

deadline is tomorrow night, the 14th at "turnover time".

And once I see who hasn't entered, I'll have my final list of judges and will make it public.

Just wanted to mention... BO2013 is coming up. If you take a couple hours to look through last year's photos for an entry for that, you may find a nice little photo essay just waiting to be culled from the mix.

already seeing amazing stuff on the entries thread. Thank you!

Photo Essays

If you want to make comments on the photo essays, I will open the thread for comments on Wednesday, when the deadline for entering is over.
