Behind Broken Glass
Why? It has recently been brought to my attention that some people don't understand why I choose the pictures I do, so I thought that I would sometimes accompany my awards with some words of explanation.
First of all, a gallery hanging does not mean I am going to buy the photo and put it on my wall. Instead, it means that I would publish it if I were putting together an arts and literary magazine. This image is publishable because it is evocative. Contrary to some presumptions, blur is not enough. Blur must be balanced with something else. In this blur, we see a rectangle. It looks like another photo held in front of a real scene. In the photo, I see two people smiling. They love each other, in some way. But this is a photo, and thus the past. Behind the photo is the present. The present is frightening, dynamic, alive, but maybe it has left behind the people or the love. The title, "broken bottle," suggests that yes, it has. Something in this photo within a photo is broken. See? The blur has a purpose: it creates the frightening motion of the present moment, and the fading vision of the past. |

... and, if it happens to be one of your Top Challenge picks that failed to make the Top 20, you can post it here. :-)
Actually, this was one of my highest picks and found it's way in the above mentioned thread earlier. |

Golden Gallery
Why? The composition is exciting. All the bigger dark shapes are toward the edge of the frame, and most go off the edge. This creates energy, echoed by the flow of the laundry. The processing simplifies the image, adding an elegance to the energy. The bucket adds an element of surprise and strangeness that keep you interested. |

Oh my....I'm really quite surprised and delighted. Thank you sooo much. The bucket is filled with clothes pins. I drilled holes in the bottom so rain water drips out. Early, early Monday is laundry time and the sun combines with the breezes to create the best smelling sheets, crisp, clean and ready to work their spell on anyone who needs a good night's sleep after a long day. :-) ahhhhh
