Originally posted by NikonJeb: Yeah, I know churches are all run by people, and maybe these women had a bad day and all, but this was just another of those examples I have seen all too often from some place that is supposed to be welcoming and giving. |
I was about 14 and helping my aunt with a church gate collection for a spina bifida charity, a condition which she was only too aware of.
The charity had reached agreement with all the churches beforehand and had sent letters to all the priests. About halfway through, I saw the parish priest walking towards us with a face like thunder. He berated my aunt for not telling him personally beforehand that they would be collecting, and that he hadn't seen the letter from the charity. My aunt stood there getting more and more embarrassed. This was at a time in Ireland when priests could do no wrong - you would never question a priest.
I was shocked, as I'd never seen a priest behave like that before, so I decided to stand up for her. I can't remember exactly what I said but it ended with "...then you don't know your own religion", his face turning very red, and a "how dare you!" as he stormed off.
Looking back, I'm glad it happened. It helped me to begin questioning something I'd never questioned before. |

I know my church is made up of sinners. Yet we are still around and have been around for while. There's gotta be some Devine Will that keeps us around or we would've been gone 500-1000 years ago. |

Jews have been around for over 4000 years ... what's your point, newcomer? ;-) |

Zoroastrians are quite old as well.. Likely that they're just as right too. ;) |

The ancient egyptians had a fully functioning and complex religion for at least 3000 years even before Alexandria The Great came on the scene. Plenty of Divine Will kept them going as well i guess. Of course, that's irrelevant if you believe the universe is only 6000 years old as some do.

Devine is a city in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,640 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Well, that puts me in my place. I tried with a few come backs, but they were pretty pathetic. |

Now the Pope has resigned.
He must have been following this thread, the only explanation. |

I believe the Pope was found to contain up to 100% horse meat. Resigning was the only thing to do. Catholics want to know they're getting what it says on the tin not some dodgy Mafia related out the back of a van job. |

The Majesterium. I was just reading the news about this and thought it was a joke. Some reporter misquoted someone.
Nope it's real. Wow. |

If the Pope is married to God and he quits... isn't that like a divorce. I thought the church frowned on divorce.

All priests are "married" to the church. The Pope's still a priest, and when he steps down from the papacy he'll still BE a priest. There's no divorce happening here. |

I'm not arguing either way, just saying.
These guys do seem to make their own rules.

More significantly, they also seem to ignore their own rules as it suits them. |
