Oh, oh. No offense intended, but are you one of those "Sarah Palin 6000 years ago" guys? It's okay if you are. I respect your right to believe in whatever you believe. |

No, I am one of those Bible-based, science supported "Earth is about 6000-10000 years old" guys.
No offense taken, I went through public school and know the ignorance taught there. |

May I commend Genesis to your attention? ;-) |
Great suggestion. Great book! |
Yes it is... especially when taken as literal history (as it is) and not as fairy tale. |
I especially like the incest that takes place. |

Yes, it did happen.
Abraham's wife was his half-sister, for example.
Lot's daughters had children by him (after getting him drunk) -- never expressly permitted, this was their sin.
Cain and Seth married their sisters. No problem.
However, there was nothing wrong or immoral with it at the time, it was not condemned (or unsafe) until later.
With Adam and Eve you had perfect DNA. With the next several generations, there would have been no or very few genetic mutations that make it unsafe today for close relatives to marry. In fact in doing genealogical research, it was not uncommon 100 years ago in USA for first cousins to still marry and their kids be just fine (as for as we can tell, LOL).
Yes it did happen then. It was prohibited later for the very reason it's not legal today.

how does perfect DNA become imperfect? |

Ask Stephen Hawking. He seems to believe something can emerge from nothing. |

Damn, i haven't had a chance this week to do anything for this. I was looking foward to it as well as i had an idea that would have suited. A lot of work though but i'll save it for another expert challenge. |

This is one that would have benefited from a longer lead time. Think of the epic things we could have imagined. I could have imagined them. Not necessarily done them, but imagined them. :) |

The squirrels may have driven the dinosaurs nuts. |

I knew trying to keep a religious thread under control on DPC would be like trying to keep water in a sieve. I'm a little surprised about which side broke through first, but there you go. Torch up everybody! Here it goes! ;) |

Nah... As I've gotten older I've learned not to argue as much... So flame away, I won't struggle. I've said my peace and petty bickering won't change anyone's mind. If they have legit questions, they should feel free to PM me.
As for the actual challenge, I will be looking at the accuracy of images with regard to the Bible.
Satan as a flaming demon with horns? Nope. He was an angel of light and the most beautiful.. that's why he's a deceiver.
Angels with wings? Nope. Only Serphim are described as having wings and they have six.
Hell as a place of fire? Nope. The Lake of Fire is later. Hell is where the unrighteous await judgement.
You may or may not believe God's Word, but it says what it says, so hopefully people went to the source instead of to the works of other artists through time.

The transformation of Lot's wife into a pillar of salt during the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was true, wasn't it. :-)
eta: little smiley. My challenge submission has nothing to do with salt.

In all honesty, people who believe the Bible literally scare me. My cousin married a creationist and I'm simply flabbergasted at the hoops you need to jump through to make sense of the world.
I used to have a subscription to Creation Magazine so I knew which angles to expect when debates would arise at family functions. |

It doesn't say she transformed into a pillar of salt, it says she became a pillar of salt. As the cataclysm was going on around her, she was lagging behind, not wanting to give up the life she was accustomed to. The phrase translated as "looked back" can also mean "lagged back" or "returned back", thus she perished. The area is replete with salt (The Dead Sea) and she perished during that, most likely buried under hot salt erupting from the earth.
Not all the difficult really. But she did become a pillar of the community. :) |

Here's the thing. I have friends who believe in a young earth who are wonderful people and would take a bullet for those they care about. I have other friends who have an open mind but personally lean toward a literal 7-day creation story. They, too, are wonderful people.
I've learned to divorce my disagreement with them over these things from who they are as people. One has very little to do with the other. Why they would "literally scare you" I have no idea. Maybe you are easily scared? I don't buy into a lot of medical hype like naturopaths or magnets or other things I view as quackery, but that doesn't mean I'm not friends with lots of people who go in for that stuff or they scare me and I think they have no ability to make rational decisions when it comes to other things.
If you believe in a multiverse or the eternality of the past, I don't think that means you should literally scare me.

Yes. In the original language... I just showed how a phrase can mean several things in the original.
Saying she became a pillar of salt because she was buried in a salt formation is not unliteral, unless you're nitpicking. |
