Thousands of trees have fallen. |
I didn't mean it quite that literally. I realize that thousands of trees have fallen due to the storm. The amount of people struck by these trees is just shocking to me. We had a storm about 10 years ago here in Oregon that took out thousands of trees also and there were similar results. I know of at least one person that was struck and killed while driving, and if I remember correctly there were others seriously injured. You just don't expect the tree that's stood so strong for decades to be what does you in, you know? |

From the article:
âIf you are heeding into the Rockaway beach to assist, there is a request for firearms, hot food, and cold beer. These next 24 hours are critical for these folks, the government has really let them down,â Meyer posted on Facebook Thursday.

it appears that very few people, either in government on any level or at home, learned a damn thing from Katrina. the finger-pointing, blaming, and lack of accountability is simply pathetic. the only heroes in this mess are those that are finding ways to selflessly help others, in spite of all the obstacles in their way. |

It amazes me how we can rapidly deploy thousands of Soldiers with everything they need anywhere in the world but somehow we can't get relief to that area! As a retired Soldier I know when Katrina hit the Indiana National Guard immediately to help. Soldiers left their families with everything they needed and were providing relief in mere days... |

The forecast models show a nor'easter off the East coast on Wednesday, Nov. 7. It will hinder cleanup efforts. This shouldn't be as powerful as Hurricane Sandy, but that assumes the nor'easter will stay offshore and move off to the NE. The conditions which caused Hurricane Sandy to do a left turn may develop. This needs to be watched carefully.

The National Guard can only deploy when called up. If the governor doesn't call them, they don't go. |

I don't think this compares to Katrina. NYC and NJ just have to get accustomed to the storms that global warming will bring. This was a huge storm that directly hit the original megalopolis around NYC. I think we're recovering as well as can be expected. What is this "finger-pointing" you're talking about? I haven't heard any.
That being said, I will be listening very closely to accounts of how Staten Island and some of the poorer northern towns near the jersey shore were treated. |

We're watching with great interest here on Cape Cod; this storm conceivably could be more troublesome to us than was the hurricane. |

don't know what kind of news you're getting, don, but i'm getting plenty of it. the interviews with people on staten island questioning where is the help are gut-wrenching. finger-pointing between those creating red-tape and those trying to cut through it. finger-pointing by people who are inconvenienced, but expecting a lot more attention.
i think in the end this will far surpass katrina.
it's not just nyc and nj, but a country as a whole needs to get a grip on emergency response.
this is a good example of what i'm talking about.

No kidding. I was FLABBERGASTED to see Mayor Bloomberg insisting the NYC Marathon would run as scheduled today. He only agreed to cancel it when public response, especially from police and other responders in general, was overwhelmingly negative. They were going to bring TENTS and GENERATORS into Staten Island (where the race was supposed to start) and arrange ferries etc to get all the runners there... Makes you wonder what planet the very rich actually inhabit, doesn't it?

Power restored here last nightâ very impressive given the extent of the damage. The crew working on my street traveled from Ottowa to clear trees and get the wires back up. Lessons were definitely learned as there was much better communication and coordination than the two superstorms we had last year. |

here you go...
Originally posted by NYTimes breaking news...: New York Faces Long-Term Housing Concerns After the Storm
With many residents left homeless after the devastation from last weekâs storm, New York-area officials began focusing on Sunday on another weather-related factor that might make the problems even worse: colder weather that is moving into the region.
In New York, 30,000 to 40,000 people, mainly residents of public housing, will have to find new homes, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said Sunday. Mr. Bloomberg compared it to the situation after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
âI donât know that anybody has ever taken this number of people and found housing for them overnight,â the mayor said.
Many residents in New Jersey, on Long Island and in Connecticut face a similar problem.
âThis is going to be a massive, massive housing problem,â Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said. |
i don't know the number of people displaced by katrina. maybe someone else does.

glad to hear somebody's learning.

I mean its not comparable to the disrespect and incompetence of the response to Katrina. That news article on the Red Cross sounds more like an editorial than an article. |

I mentioned this a while back... The 12z European model is in... and there will be NO CHANGE to our first call map from yesterday, found here... //epawablogs.com/epawa-first-call-map-discussion-for-wednesdaythursday-noreaster/ This model, the same one that nailed Hurricane Sandy 8 days out, has had a similar solution to this for 8 consecutive runs. Hard to argue against it at this point, despite some other models being further east. I would say at this point, if you live near the shore points, gear up for mother nature to kick you when you're already down, unfortunately. This will NOT be a Hurricane Sandy strength system, but bad nonetheless. Interior snows could exceed 6" in elevated areas of Central PA and the Poconos in PA on the run, mix further S&E. We will release a 2nd call tomorrow, which will include expected amounts of wind, rain, and snow...

Do you mean Ottawa, I know that there were crews dispatched from the Ottawa area, as well as from different areas in Quebec to help out with this disaster.
Just curious,

Yep, Hydro Ottawa. They were clearing some big spruce trees across the power lines in front of my house. Nice folks. I handed out gloves and biscotti. |

For sure. Remember too that CL&P had told many of the crews, who were capable of restoring power, only to cut power to cut trees, not to restore.

To be expected since the local utility company knows the layout of their own circuits. There was a United Illuminating truck making stops among the tree crews to make sure everything was intact before throwing the switch. |

That was actually one of the criticisms during the review of CL&P's response last year. The problem was is that those line crews brought in last year were surprised by CL&P's response not to restore power because in their experiences when called in to other places they actually did the restoration.

I spoke with a couple of crews from Joplin, MO and ComEd from Illinois and both were amazed at how bad and dated and obsolute our electrical infrastructure has become. These crews were doing real power restoration.
Putting lines on telephone poles is 19th century and the lines themselves are incredibly outdated as well. Maybe the antiquate system is why CL-P is doing the restoration because nobody remembers how to do it the old way.... |

Heh heh...perhaps. The crew we talked with (last year) was familiar enough. At my parents house, the guy from Ohio said he'd restore it despite CL&Ps request not to. :) My father gave them a little "thank you" for it. :)
