I've ran into it on a couple occasions, where even after removing any possible spyware apps, and running Ad-Aware, spybot, & hijack this, then changing the homepage to google. Reboot, and the homepage is still hijacked. The worst one I had to fix, I had to install Firefox just to fix. Typing www.google.com or any other web address would bring you to the hijacked website/search engine. If I did a search for Ad-Aware, the hijack would block the website. I had to install Firefox, then use firefox to get the ad removal apps, even after running all 3, I still had to manually remove 30 or 40 entries in the registry to fix.
And yes, if you do want to use IE, keeping the updates current is a must. Problem is most people don't. |

Your right about most people. Did you ever figure out which site/spyware/addware hijacked the page. I used to work for a small business that fixed computers for other small businesses. About all I did was removing viruses and spyware (and some hardware upgrades/repairs and the like). The worst one I ever came across was an "adult" site. I ended up emailing the contact person for the site and he sent me a tool to complete the uninstall. Mostly the users I delt with were shopping on-line during their breaks (yeah, right!) and got the msbb program. I forgot the real name but if there was msbb.exe in the msconfig start up, you had to get rid of it before doing anything else. Oh, and they all swore it was virus and they didn't load anything!
Another advantage to the other programs is that they can be uninstalled. This in not an option with IE. If you have Windows, you get IE wether you want it or not. It seems that alot of people don't realize they have a choice and they don't have to use IE.

I think it was coolwebsearch. After quick google I found this
"CoolWebsearch Browser Hijacker
Coolwebsearch is the name for a long list of browser hijackers. It uses many names and is especially difficult to clean manually. If your browser is going to strange search pages, you probably have CoolWebSearch.
Important! A new variation of Coolwebsearch includes the CWS SmartKiller, which prevents you from reaching anti-spyware sites, and keeps Spybot and Hijackthis from working."
Sounds like what I had to deal with, though not 100% sure. It was a while ago, and I've cleaned a lot of PC's. |

*nods* And that's one reason why I believe my site is mostly visited by IE users (even if they have it report IE like RobCoursey said). When they're mostly in the young teens and such, I doubt they have their own computer, can convince their parents to get the different browser, or even know it exists. ^_^ But, that's also why I asked here, since it seems like a lot of people here (well that post in the forums) have different browsers.
I'm not sure if I'm gonna go for a non-IE browser when I get my laptop. I keep everything up-to-date and do regular virus sweeps and spyware checks. Now I realize that everyone's going to try to convince to go for another browser, but I already get the idea, okay? ^^;;

Firefox here too :)
interestingly, alot of people have said firefox in this thread.. yet it's like what.. 0.07% on your stats? you might want to reset your counter somehow.. since it's goes so far back. Firefox didn't even exist back then i dont beleive.. you're statistic are being modified by a few years of IE dominance.. I'm sure it still dominates now, but i can hardly beleive that TODAY, still so few people use firefox heh..

Firefox all the way!
Pretty much everyone I know has had to fight a spyware/adware infection at some point... some times for weeks on end. I thought I was smarter than that and had Spybot S&D resident installed, kept up to date with patches, never went to "questionable" websites. And I STILL got infected!
So when I finally got cleaned up, I switched to Firefox and have been very happy with it. I still have to jump into IE once in a blue moon, but mainly for work related stuff. (and I cringe the whole time)
But after living with Firefox for a few months, I realize it's a vastly superior browser anyway, regardless of the security isssue :) |

One last thing. On my website, the stats went from about 95% IE to about 45% IE since april. This is a gamer's site, so we tend to be early adopters. But still, that's a big change in just a few months.

Been using IE6 for ages and decided a few days ago to try something else.
Chose Firefox and although still playing around with it, it certainly is faster and cleaner than IE6, but I haven't found out yet how to show my old IE6 favourites down the side of the screen.
But at this time, a 99% improvement. |

OKay, go to View on toolbar, toolbars then customize.
Select bookmark icon and drag it onto the toolbar at the top of the screen.
Hey Presto...favourites are there! |

I've been using Firefox for a couple weeks now, and it is great, except that I was having a problem when clicking links in external programs (like my mailer) opening a browser window twice even though I only clicked once. Well today I did a little digging, and I found that this is a "known bug", and this article talks about how to fix it very easily by downloading a .reg file and doube-clicking it to import it in to your Windows registry. No more double-windows for me!
Not sure if anybody else was experiencing this behavior, but thought I'd mention it... |

I used the tabbrowser extensions a while ago to stop multiple windows opening at all - this just drops things like email file links straight in to a tab in the background, doesn't switch context at all which suits how I browse.
As to the original topic, I use Firefox on my 3 PCs. I used to use mozilla but ditched it for the lighter Firebird/fox/random animal of the week.
It takes a bit of digging to configure Firefox 'usefully' and get the various extensions that give the features that you want, rather than the more kitchen sink approach of Mozilla, but I find it worth the trouble.

I d/loaded firefox and thunderbird last night, everything went well.
Did a great job of importing all my mail/newsservers settings and the anti-junk facility in thunderbird is excellent.
No real problems with the browser, I like the multi-tab idea, very handy.
So, up to now its thumbs up and thanks all for this thread.

Why spends hours digging through the registry? Simply uninstall the freeware/shareware program that highjacked it in the first place and don't install it again. My Dad visits some site (I don't know and I don't want to know) that installs msbb. I have to remove it about once a month cause he really likes that site. I do like Netscape better than IE except that in some instances it can't open pages or pictures. So I just stick with IE and a free pop-up blocker that works pretty good. |
It isn't this easy. I'm an IT person with a fairly extensive Windows background and I still get IE hijacked once in awhile. Spybot using fixes it, but I have had to dig around the registry on at least two occasions.
Just the other day I watched as an I/T architect, and a good one at that, was rushing to download spybot before a presentation because IE got hacked and was redirecting to a porn site.
I use a mac and Safari at home, where I have a choice, and I use Firefox for work unless using an app that requires IE.

I'm a Firefox user at home. Internet Explorer at work (I don't have a choice here at work).
I've noticed about the same proportions as Amy did on my weblog, as well, though it's only been around for a couple of weeks.

I've tried 7 of those at least... I still use IE for everything except Gunbound, for that I use netscape because it doesn't have the font I can't read that's on their website lol. |

Opera mostly.. I open IE sparingly if I hit a robust java application that Opera can't handle. |

I installed Opera to try it out, but found out the menu bar in DPC doesn't render in Opera, so I uninstalled it less than an hour later. Doesn't make sense to use a browser that doesn't support my most-visited web site! (That is when I installed Firefox, since I really wanted tabbed browsing...) |

I like tabbed browsing the best when I'm looking through the results of a challenge - want to see a picture in full, open it up in a new tab. Then, go right back to where you were.
