I am new to this site and missed the portrait challenge entirely. As someone who specializes in portraits I would love the oppurtunity to see how I compare to some of the site favs.

slid your post over to the "challenge suggestion" forum! :)

I think challenges revisted are a cool idea, but I like it a lot when there is a new twist added. I wouldn't mind portrait challenge with a little extra added.

Well the usual style is to do 'challenge theme with challenge theme banned' so how about 'portraits without any people in the picture!!! and be creative'

Or how 'bout 'Upside Down' portrait, or 'portrait with found light' or 'portrait: back of the head' or 'portrait: in nature' or ????

Actually, I really like Gordon's idea. Take a photo that demonstrates someone's personality--but they can't be in the shot. Hmmm.

Since there are so many of us newer members around now, how about "Self-Portrait Revisited" or something along those lines?

That's what I was gonna suggest, but it might be a little too limiting. How about Portraits Without Faces?

How about, rather than the usual weird limitations, Portraits with faces ?

I get the feeling that often the idea of being 'zanny' or encouraging 'creativity' with these arbitrarily silly limitations is taken too far.

So people enter cliched shots - they aren't suddenly going to be stretched to do something original because they are told they cant use the first tihng that came in to their head.

The real surprises would come from those who do something really creative and innovative, exactly with the usual, tired old subjects. In many ways, the idea of removing the 'usual' from the challenges stifles creative exploration of those things people want to take pictures of.

If you just want to encourage creativity, try Portraits with Pineapples. THAT ought to get the juices flowing. ;-)

I'm going to be interested to see how "hope works out, since so many people begged for a "simple" challenge with no explanation.

I notice that neon has alot of very poorly put together images (I didn't enter since I couldn't execute anything that wasn't lame), and many many straight shots of signs.

Maybe a simpler challenge will garner more thoughtful images?

I think eventually there will be a portrait 2 challenge but for the near future it seems unlikely to me as we just had the first most recently.
I like the idea & the with twist sounds nice as well!
