From the website of my local botanical garden:

Photography Permits
After extensive research of botanical gardens across the United States, it has been decided that it is in everyone's best interest to develop and maintain a photography procedure and permitting process.
Starting January 1, 2004, all professional photographers are required to obtain a permit for any and all photo sessions, indoors or out. The permit fee of $25/hour or $250/year is due and payable upon receipt of permit.

Too bad you have a "Pro" camera : (

Just say you're taking them for a class, and don't publish them.

Wish I could. My ex's mother runs the gardens. Luck is not on my side.

In that case, $250/year sounds like a bargain for you ... : )

Are you a professional? Or just a tourist, come from across the country to photograph what is, by all reports made by friends and relatives from around here, one of the best botanical gardens in the country with some of the nicest people anywhere helping the tourists out? Put a spin on it. Blarny opens many doors.
oops, to bad about the face recongition.

How about if you're not a professional and just a Dub like me. I have no motives beyond collecting a few shots and posting them or entering them in a challenge? If these institutions are publicly owned I should not be restricted too much. A fee to shoot flowers is over the top as far as I'm concerned. If I want to shoot flowers all I have to do is go to a cemetary.

I get very annoyed when I've been challenged or refused about taking a shot.

A breath of fresh air on this subject. Vacation this year, as last year, will be in D. C. and the public museums not only allow photos but I was actually reasured that photography was encouraged. National Gallery here I come! Some flash restrictions apply though, which I understand. The Bill of Rights and all those original documents are fragile. No problem from me on that one.

I was thinking of the annoyance factor ... you can go poking around her pet project all year with official permission.

Hmmm. There's an idea.

Our gardens charge $50.00 per professional visit. Meaning: Senior photos, weddings, family photos where there is an exchange of money for photographic services. Today I was just a mom snapping photos no one asked. I guess since we had a whining child with us there was no question about the mom status. Now, if one of you wants to pay me for the photos taken today I'll gladly send the Botanic Gardens a check ;-)
