It all starts innocently enoughâ€Â¦

You get yourself a little digital camera and discover the joy of photography. It’s so cool to be able to shoot & shoot & shoot & shoot with no worries about getting film developed.

You begin to notice that your once adequate hard drive is filling up quickly so you add an external hard drive to hold all those invaluable pictures.

With your new found interest in photography, you’re inspired to take better pictures so you head on down to the bookstore for the latest edition of “Take Perfect Pictures with your Digicam – Guaranteed!”

Then you start to become frustrated with the shutter lag of your current camera so you buy a better one, convinced that this new model will be the answer to your photographic woes.

New digital camera – woo hoo! And it ships with Photoshop LE or Elements or some such software. Back to the bookstore to get another book on how to use that. But wow! Look at all those books about Photoshop. That must be the ultimate, you think to yourself. So you figure, why notâ€Â¦ a full version of Photoshop is now installed on your computer and you’re pumped.

Photoshop is truly fantastic! You know because you’ve been back to the bookstore for five more books on the subject and you’re really getting the hang of it. Problem is that your computer just isn’t quite good enough and waiting for something to process in PS is really frustrating your creative flow. You’ve heard that Apple makes a good computer for graphics so pretty soon you’re unpacking a brand-spanking-new Mac dual processor G5 to replace the dinosaur you’d been forced to deal with. A BIG new monitor too because you have to be able to see what you’re doing, right?

However, the pictures you’ve printed out on your new wide-format printer that promises a print longevity of at least a hundred years don’t look right. In fact, they look downright awful! Hmmmâ€Â¦ what do you do? Color management comes to your rescue and soon you are producing prints that match what you see on your BIG monitor because you’ve invested in this hockey-puck looking thingie and you’ve created your very own ICC profiles! Sure it cost a mint but damn it! yellow should be yellow!

Life is good with the exception that you are really beginning to feel limited by the fixed lens on your new digicam. So you buy a newer digicam – a digital SLR! Oh, the freedom! You now have the ability to purchase a lens dedicated to every form of photography known to man and by God, you will not hold back on your photographic vision! A new bag to hold all the new lenses now travels with you everywhere.

A couple of external hard drives later, you discover that you can’t find that image of the bug resting on the yellow daisy that your cat is holding in it’s mouth. Digital asset management is the solution but the free applications piss you off – more limitations! You are not going to waste your time with limitations! You buy the application that is recommended in all the photography magazines that you have subscriptions to. The application wasn’t cheap but these are your prized images for the love of Mike!

Now you are happy! Nirvana is yours! You have the equipment and it’s good equipment and you’re making some pretty darn good images. But sadly, no one knows what a good photographer you are because no one else can see your work. Your own website and registered domain bring an end to your solitary photo endeavors. Web hosting isn’t cheap either but you don’t want to go with a service that isn’t 100% reliable 24/7 now do you? Plus you need tons of space!

Business cards are the only logical next step as you’ve begun to realize that your true calling is a photography career matched only by [insert favorite fabulously wealthy photographer here].

Of course, you’re broke and your kid’s college fund suddenly doesn’t take priority any more, but those Ramen noodles aren’t bad with a little ketchupâ€Â¦

Great article and very funny! You need to submit this to some magazines.
Looks like you could be supplementing your photography habit quite nicely with your new writing career. Maybe...even paying for your kids college and the neighbor kids!! Dream Big!!
Thanks for the laugh!

Lol!!
Not to mention the 3 tetrabyte CF card which is necessary to store the hundreds of Raw images you expect to take, plus the 2 minute Battery charger & 6 extra batteries to insure you are always powered up.
Flash + remote triggers.
Moddeling fees to pay.
Home studio to furnish (Probably need a new house to fit it in)!
New car/van/truck to take this stuff with you on the road.
Reflector + assistant fees to pay for someone to hold it.
And you gotta get those filters!!!
