The photo belong to the individual photographers -- the site just has a RF license to display them.

To make a composite print we'd have to have explicit permission from each photographer whose picture is included. We can make a poster with just a few of the prints (larger) from people who volunteer/contribute their image, and not worry about trying to get every entry. Create a thread, set a deadline, and people posting a link to the hi-res image would contitute permission to reproduce it for this purpose.

Do you envision printing a one-off for Dallas only, or letting everyone who has a picture on it (and anyone else) order them as well?

Yes, all of that sounds very good, please somebody pop over and start a good thread for this - remember to title it clearly! :)

We might try to find out which ones Dallas/mom liked best, and be sure to include them, PM users if needed.

...

As far as one-off for Dallas or ... whatever... I do not care in the least, as it has no effect upon me or my plans here. :)

I thought it was understood that the challenge was for Dallas. IMO, permission was implicit. Besides, it is easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for (and receive) permission - and not because anyone would deny it, just may not see the request. My take on it, anyway.

eta: If I had entered and not seen a permission request and found out that my image was excluded, I would be a bit miffed at that.

Yup. +1

If anyone disagrees after the fact, they can go to the hospital room and black out their picture. :)

Of course, DPC prints might be able to get a good enough value that I'd go that way too... Whatever, I'm open.

ETA: If the 20x30 size is bad for whatever reason, then just do what makes sense. I expect that everyone involved is more than intelligent enough, and are almost certainly are well informed enough to make the right decisions.

My general values on something like this basically indicate that we shouldn't sacrifice reasonable quality to save $$, but we also shouldn't spend crazy $$ for a marginal increase in quality. Follow that and I'll be happy with wherever we end up I'm sure.

DPC Prints base prices and see what looks reasonable. It may depend on the number of images and resolution ... they can be pasted-up on almost any shape print. Note that instead of a poster, it might be interesting to go with a "banner" shape; a 12" x 60" print is only $12 ... I'd prefer to post it at DPCP so that people can order their own (or order as a gift and have it drop-shipped), and no one else has to do anything once it's finished.

To whomever takes up this endeavor, you have my explicit permission to use my "For Dallas" challenge entry.

Clarification is needed ... there's no way to complete a collage with all 91 entries this weekend -- I doubt all of the hi-res images could even be gathered/downloaded by then* ... on the other hand a poster/banner with 10-20 images is quite possible.

*Actually, with that many photos to fit on the print, the entry-sized images should be big enough (about 110 images averaging 800x600 pixels fit on a 20"x30" print). I suppose even screen-shots of the entries would work ... ;-)

IMO, set it up as a 1.50:1 ratio, that gives a bunch of options. I think if we do this in DPC Prints, then I'd like to send Dallas a 24x36 for him, and 2 of the 20x30 for mom/archival purposes.

However, all of those prices are totally fine, so whatever the artist/group chooses, I'll be happy about it.

I don't care about speed.

Frankly, I would prefer for this to take a month or two, since Dallas will need another booster then more than he does now.

I guess a 24x36 ($20 at DPCP) setup makes the most sense -- it will fit the images as grabbed from the site, and it can be printed at six smaller sizes costing from about $14 to under a dollar.

Here is a rough draft (20x30 setup) with the first few images ... be sure to click on the link to view the full-sized image or you may need to get a new monitor and keyboard (you've been warned!)

This method has the advantage of automatically including the title and photographer. Let me know what other text (if any) you want on there ...

Where do we post our high res images to?

I hereby grant permission for whomever makes the poster for Dallas to include my entry from the challenge.

I think they're just going to go with the low res. You have my permission as well.
05/04/2012 07:36:53 PM · #39
Definitely have my permission, and it may be a good idea to specify exactly what dpi is high-res and low-res - I'm guessing 300 dpi as high and 72 as low?
05/04/2012 07:40:29 PM · #40
My permission is granted :-)

Check out (the full-sized version of) the sample I posted -- no one needs to post anything else; I am just taking the images directly from the challenge results. At the size we are printing, they are already at high resolution (300 dpi on the largest print).

Anybody want any text beyond a simple descriptive caption?

I'd think simply the *image title*, by *username* should suffice. Adding too much info may just confuse things.

I'm capturing that with the pictures ... unless someone wants something else I'll just add the challenge title, date, and DPC logo across the bottom the bottom (or top?).
