as far as expert editing... are things like lens flare, etc. OK? or do they fall under the "you may not add graphics or clipart" rule?

Lens flare is fine in any ruleset.

It's OK in Expert, not anywhere else.

Sorry for the confusion. I don't think of lens flare as something that can be added in post. Lens flare is a natural phenomenon. Anyway, the rules relating to effects filters apply in your case.

I say yes, but you could pm an SC and ask.

The rules state that you may:
- apply a full range of editing tools to all or part of your entry.

So I'd say yea. The effect doesn't qualify as clip art or graphics, if that was your concern. Maybe someone from SC can chime in just to confirm.

That's what I meant. I meant it was in some not in others. Just not in "any" ruleset.

I'll let someone else deal with the ticket, but FWIW ...

Okay... wow... Expert editing and I'm sooo lost. I've only done 1 expert challenge so far, and let's just say that I wished I hadn't...LoL... so... with that said... Can I create a background out of a solid color and gradients? I mean, I'm just sort of lost as to what is legal and what isn't?
04/21/2012 11:06:48 PM · #19
Focus less on what's legal and more on what looks good. ;-)

...but the answer is yes.

Someone remind me what 5 year old boys like please. I'm really drawing a blank here. I know he likes Nascar, but the next race around here isn't till June. ;D

You can create almost everything from scratch except text. You can be sure, GeneralE is part of the SC ;)

In any case I can show you my example of a validate image with a lens flare created in PS:

So can someone define 'graphics' for me. I've not allowed myself to use Filter Forge borders even in expert because I thought that could be graphics, also more tricky filters from there that I'd like to use, but not sure I would be allowed to.
The black part of this is one example of what I haven't allowed myself from Filter Forge. (The colour came from heat map in Picasa with Topaz and other PS modifications.)

I would assume so... it just looks like a texture. (But don't trust me -- it's just a guess.)

"Graphics" is defined here as "something you downloaded elsewhere, and did not create by yourself". For example, cliparts, backgrounds made by other people, others photos or images (even copyright free ones) etc.

As long as you created it, either by hand, or by using some kind of tool or plugin, it's ok. That is how I interpreted the rule so far, and got validated multiple times, so I am pretty confident about that.

That in itself is no guarantee -- some validations have split votes, and I've often been in the minority ... but in this case, I'm just repeating the rule: you can use your editing software for just about anything except creating text or placing predesigned images (clip art or other graphics) which are not part of photos taken by you during the challenge submission period (with the exception for textures).
