A follow up about the Mourning Doves that had been nesting in my window frame next to the A/C

Each image has a description included.

Two weeks from egg laying to hatching. Two more weeks and the birds are fledged. Very quick turn around. It is said that Mourning Doves can have as many as 6 broods in one season.

I'm late to the game, but would like to jump in and submit. I'll check out how to post these thumbnail links and start posting.

Edit: I see paid membership is required to upload to a portfolio here, and I get paid tomorrow, so I'll sign up then since I want to participate in member contests anyway. In the meantime I'll put together a folder while I'm waiting.

The membership is worth it! There are so many side challenges going on all the time. Look forward to seeing what species you can photograph!

I'm ready to go, first thing after work tomorrow. I've got a folder full of shots I took last weekend.

Question... I'm guessing a male mallard and a female mallard only count as one, eh? Also...I have several shots of what I call hybrid ducks. I know this is not an official thing and it's probably a nice relaxed thing...but I'm just curious what public opinion is about what counts as a "different" bird. Know what I mean?

Also....we happened across a guy at Dana Point last weekend who had some exotic birds he was showing...not sure the names of them...but since they're not technically from the wild...is that frowned upon? I mean...they weren't exactly zoon birds...haha...but they also couldn't exactly fly away either.

The bird ID authorities have taken to using DNA testing to identify species. For example, there used to be six species of juncos. The "scientists", through DNA testing discovered these "species" were interbreeding. Hence, we now have one junco species with many regional color variations. So, I'm not the person making any rules, but I'd say, if it's a unique species, it counts as one. You are encouraged to show male or female, but only one species.

I'd be delighted to see exotic species. Zoo, menagerie, wild, captive, pets, domestic..... if it's a bird, it counts. Glad you will be joining us. I'll be happy to help with ID, as that is what I do a lot.... as a dedicated birder.

Starting with four Australian birds, and one from China.

Red-tailed Black Cockatoo (female)

Sulphur-crested Cockatoo

Darter, or Snakebird. It looks like a cormorant, and is often called one, but it's a distinct species.

Galah (one of my favourite birds)

Golden Pheasant (has quite a long tail)

Nice group of birds. Very colorful and well captured. I don't see a way to comment on each individual image.
