This is actually a challenge I think would be a lot of fun in Expert :) Though I am no PS master ninja warrior, I think it would breed some cool entries from others... I'm going to go out on a limb and say there will be >85% housecat pictures in this one, I will objectively grade on technical quality of each photo since I am not a cat owner :) |

Heh, well from that I got this mental image of what an Expert Editing entry could be. Title: Raining Cats and Dogs in which a person is running through the downpour holding an umbrella. |

See now that could be awesome if done by some of the real PP wizards we have at this site :) Or "It's raining cat-nose photos" entry with a man running from framed photos of housecats :)

The first challenge must have been originally titled People & Pets Making Out, as about 90% of the images show stereotypically cute stuff like hugging/kissing between people and animals. I've worked with animals for well over 30 years, and get fed up with seeing sugarcoated Disney portrayals.
Relationships with animals usually do consist of physical affection, true, but there is so much more than that. Some pets work with their people, others are assistance animals. Some people respect their people, some don't. Some pets are also livestock. Some are show animals. Some pets and people barely tolerate each other.
So hopefully people will be a little more daring this time around.
ETA: Yes, my profile pic shows me with a relatively tame doe. But, what you can't see due to the size of the image...she's sticking her tongue out at me. Nothing Disneyish about having a wild animal mocking you!

Now that I have thought back, I wish this challenge had been earlier - back at the DPC 10th Anniversary GTG, I found that I captured about a dozen type of people and their pets shots...It would be interesting to see different relationships and/or emotions represented than just the 'Disney' portraits you mentioned. |

Exactly. A relationship contains a whole spectrum of emotions, it's rather sad to see just the kyootsy-pooh end of things and not everything else. I never kiss my cats, nor do I pick them up and squish them to my chest and parade them around. But that doesn't mean I don't love them, it simply means that we spend our time doing other things. |

To be fair, the challenge info says to capture the affection between a pet and the owner, so affectionate huggy/kissy pictures fit the bill perfectly fine. I don't think it's really fair to mock those cutesy images, so many people like them because they're sweet and remind them of the lovely relationships between themselves and their pets. :-)

Other things like plotting to take over the world? That is what I imagine cats spend their time doing while gazing ominously into the distance for hours at a time :)

Not so much mocking them, just fed up with them. I know that probably a stereotypical huggy/kissy pic will win, and I don't care. But I do feel that there are other ways to capture that expression of affection than in huggy/kissy photos. Surely you don't express affection for your significant human other through just hugs and kisses. There are a million other small, subtle ways for two people to convey their affection, and it is possible to capture some of those ways in a human/animal dynamic, too.
Fer example: Here Tori, the girl, is laughing at the funny face being made by Twilight, her horse, and he seems to be having fun too. No huggy/kissy, but very obviously they are both enjoying the moment. Would this not constitute affection? I could have made it more obvious by having a lipstick print on Twilight's lip, but didn't as I felt it would be demeaning.
In an entirely different vein... here the idea was not so much to show affection but some level of what I call respectful tension. Daisy, the horse, and I are both strongheaded and often have pissing contests. She loves to push her boundaries, especially as she gets away with murder with her owners, but I won't let her get away with anything. And she knows it but still likes to try and push my buttons. I could have made the tension really obvious by hauling on the leadshank but I didn't, as I knew that we were both already conveying what I wanted to project with the Mexican standoff atmosphere between us.
And Ken...fwiw, I spent a vast sum of money to prolong the life of my beloved 17-year-old male cat, Druli, who had been with me for 15 1/2 years, by approximately six weeks. Including paying for the vet to make a home visit at the end.

The local pet festival was last Saturday,,, : (
I took Jules, one of my parrots, so didn't have time to shoot at all anyway.

Hello all,
I am in but do not expect high votes. I am trying my best to learn and practice lighting with the crappy lights that I have and feel I keep coming up short. I put my best one in but feel I have a long way to go if I am going to be a studio photographer.
I think I really just need to gather up some cash somehow and get some real lights. Not the kind you get from Lowe's. |

Appears to be a lot of entries coming in late. I started shooting mine 4 hours ago. I hate rushing a shoot. I need to start on After the Party tonight so I'm not behind on editing. |
