Unfortunately the converse never seems to work either ... if I gripe (or stay mum) about a mediocre score it doesn't rise ... : )

Wow. You're doing great Jacko in both challenges.
Not so hot here but not as low as I'm used to.

This is my first entry so I wasn't expecting much. I do think it turned out better than my "miniature" entry. I am pleased that so many people have viewed my entry and my score is about what I expected. However I am disappointed at the only comment so far. I purposely softened the image to get a "fluffy" appearance and this person commented that the picture wasn't sharp enough. Hmm....just wondering if I should have left it alone? I thought it was more interesting the way I submitted it although it lost some of it's brilliant color. Oh well...not bad for my first I think! :)

ara-blu. I think you will find that a lot of people on this site like their pictures razor sharp most of the time. There are exceptions, but if you have a choice between sharp and soft, go for sharp.
edit: ever click the edit button and forget why?

*grrs* I did the same thing as ara-blue because it added to my picture and didn't take away (in my, my mother's, and my boyfriend's opinions). And now...I went from a 5.2 when I last checked at 2AM EST to a 4.85 (now with a comment)! Just shoot me now. I really thought that this and my Everyday Objects entries were WAY above past ones, but somehow, my dog photo from Out Of Place has earned me my only 6 and I didn't really think it was my best!

Thanks for the advice! I will try for sharp from now on.

Whenever I think that I have a good shot, I score poorer. I have been thinking more these days and my scores are falling down.

Now I think I should stop thinking.

I´m getting also low scores, I mean below my average. The problem is that I thought this was one of my best.

Now, I don´t know which are the criteria you are using to vote.

I was really suprised by this, I thought this was easily a photo that could go in a magazine ad or on the wall (I'm putting it on my wall for sure).

The only comment said "focus" which isn't helpful at all, what do they mean?!? It's not out of focus, and there's a focal point to the image. They haven't entered any challenges yet, so I am going to disregard the comment unless they elaborate.

Yeah, I'm getting my ears boxed, and I really like my photograph. Are people looking for a moon or something?

4.49, no comments. Criminal.

If a moon shot gets a ribbon, I'll kill someone.
08/02/2004 06:17:31 PM · #64
skylen, I don't think you need to worry, I didn't see any moon shots so far that said "Wow" and I'm 80% through. Lots of other shots that say wow though, lots of 8s,9s, and 10s

edit: Of course, since I said that, I just got a top notch Moon photo to vote on :) There is a chance you will have to become a murderer, skylen, I'm sorry.

Well, as long as it's actually about BLUE, it's okay....

Being a newbie, I can tell you all why you're not getting comments. I tried to carefully go through and comment on why I rated a photograph low and have gotten nothing but irrate responses and condemnation (that was an exaggeration -- I did get one very kind response from a Canadaian photographer). I tried to word the comments constructively, in a manner that I would have found helpful and clear, and have been verbally assalted everytime I checked my email today! I'll NEVER comment on another photograph. I would appreciate knowing why my first entry was/is rated low, but have received only 2 positive comments. Being on the receiving end of disappointed photographers today I don't expect that people who rate me low will be inclined to comment.

Looks like the "middle of the pack curse". Not good enough or bad enough to elicit comments. Hopefully, people are just going through the voting and will get back to adding comments when they are done.

Dipaulk, based on your comment, I think you might want to consider whether your criticism is coming off as patronizing or unclear, I have commented on many photos without an outpouring of negative feedback, and to recieve so many retaliatory responses suggests to me that you may inadvertently be producing non-constructive sounding comments.

I encourage you to keep commenting, and not be discouraged by what seem to be negative responses, since they clearly feel they recieved the same from you, perhaps you both are saying one thing but communicating something different.

Look say a photo is okay. Sharp image as intended and good comp but say the lighting is too harsh. You can say:

I like the subject matter and composition however the lighting appears a bit harsh. With better lighting I would have given a 7. As is, since I like the picture I am giving you a 6. Nevertheless, the image is very appealing.

Here, the member knows you are displaying good will and will relook at his picture and realize the truth in your observation. Always remember that when you leave a comment the member will click on your profile to see the difference between your votes received and the votes you cast average. So far my score is climbing. I guess the late voters got the gist of the challenge and was not looking for a moon shot.

I will certainly take that into consideration. After trying to carefully comment on several -- it took me so long because I really didn't want to say anything negative --- I'm sure I got sloppy towards the end. And I should have remembered that most creative people are melancholic personality types and get their feelings hurt very easily, just as I do. I think I'll just hold off a while on any comments until I do have a few more challenges under my belt.

What happens if someone just doesn't vote on photos they don't like, but still get their percentages so the votes on the ones they do like will count? Doesn't that give the poorer photos an unfair advantage? I thought about just trying that until I could learn more about what I'm doing.

I received one of your comments and I liked the directness and honesty. You simply stated what you would have preferred. I hope you continue to vote on all images and comment on as many as possible. There's all types here on DPC, and some are perhaps too sensitive - even when they say they want comments. I get cowed into not saying what I really want to and don't like that when I let it happen. Thank you for your comment and please don't stop! And good luck to you also. I have personally started upping my scores across the board to try to be fair to all; my tastes honestly run against the grain and it would appear I score "low". So hopefully that helps all, also.

...average as in if the scoring is from 1-10, the average between the high and low is 5.5...that's what I meant. I'm actually above my average score received, which is wonderful to me! I try to aim for ending at or above 5.5 every time. Haven't made it every time, and sometimes NOWHERE in the vicinity...but it's a reasonable goal. I'm this close now...someone give me a 10!!! ;o)
