Hi Don! Thank you too. The found paper clip next to a cracked crack bisecting scattered dirt was too much of a bvy opportunity to pass up and I was having a paper clip day anyway.

The Symmetrically Artificial Gallery of Artificial Symmetry

a note on this challenge: pure symmetry is boring. it is a huge challenge to create something aesthetically viable from pure symmetry. I avoided it by overlaying an image on top of an image that was not purely symmetrical. Others created gorgeous images and "flipped" them into symmetry. So they were beautiful *in spite of* their symmetry. The three above actually found something interesting in the symmetry itself. Quite an achievement.

Basically, I think this was a useful challenge, but the symmetry should be a starting point. It's no good for a finished image except in the rarest cases.

Thanks, Don. My images caught your eye a few times in the past month, for that I'm very grateful.

My wife asked me yesterday: Why, if you KNOW nobody is going to like the image, do you make it, and worse, post it on a challenge site?
All I can say is that it is such a thrill to see the image emerge on the screen, and then very nice for it to be noticed by way of the comments. [also, I'm probably unable to produce a ribboning entry, except by mistake]

So thank you for all the comments received over the months.

I like Don's ramblings educated dissection on symmetry so much, I repeat it here. Much nicer to read these opinions than the technical stuff on the state of the rules. [I read them for the story behind the story]

The Gilded Lily for excellence in flower photography in the Art challenge:

From these 2 comps in particular, & the Art challenge in general, I learned something--
it's easy to make a picture of something, but it isn't art or excellent photography
unless the comp uses the subject to give the viewer more than just the facts. For example,
a story told directly by the details, or better yet a story created in the mind of the viewer.

I'm so thrilled to see two of my photos featured in this thread. Thanks Paul and pixelpig.
