I don't really have preferences for every possible option presented, but here are a few thoughts:

1)I'm on dial-up and I love the idea presented in the first post.

2)I definately want the ability to skip a picture without voting. There are times when I'm unsure of the photographer's intent and realise that I need to come back to the picture later before voting.

Why do we need so many votes? Does your score change aprecialby after the first 100 votes? I think a better option is to let me stop speed voting at 20% and then spend my time voting with longer comments (ie present system). An ideal challenge has fewer entries, say 100, so people have time to both vote and comment. If the challenge has 300, we don't need 300 votes, 100 will do, and time can be spent commenting.

I'm not sure what problem you are trying to solve here. That people might vote on images they like and not vote on ones they don't? Is there truely a lack of votes on the lowest images? Would their scores go up if there were more votes?

Unless there are photos which really aren't getting a fair share of votes, like not a critical mass to make a reeasonable score, then I'm afraid I just don't get it.

There is a "significant" difference in the number of votes given to the higher- and lower-scoring photos. It's not so much the "critical mass" of votes which is important, but that each photo get "fair" exposure and the opportunity for comments.

It's been hashed to death here, but it seems obvious that the photos which can most benefit from comments are those in the 4-5 range, those with some promise or a good idea but which have substantial room for improvement, yet those are classically the very photos which get the fewest comments. People find it so much easier to write "Fantastic -- a winner for sure!" or "What were you thinking" than to take the time to figure out just what they don't like about a photo, and express that constructively.

This prevents people from skipping around to say "Great photo" on all the pretty ones, while skipping the harder work of actually evaluating and criticizing an average or below-average photo such that the photographer has a chance of submitting something better the next time.

That (helping each other become better photographers) is the purpose of the site. The contests are merely the mechanism we use to format our "lessons."

I am ALL for this proposal. A slightly different direction, too, is that with more and more members and users, and especially when 3 challenges are all being voted on, it is even more difficult to get a reasonable amount of votes for an "average" shot. Thanks!

Sometimes forgotten and very important, at least to me.

The thumbnail should be just that. I don't think there should be an option to see the full size image before voting begins. If the full size is available before voting and someone wants to look at it, they should only be allowed to comment on that particular image. **I know I have found some beautiful pictures after I have decided to quit voting per my current system so I would miss taking a quick look/see, but if something is needed to improve the distribution of votes, why just tease everyone?**
There should be an option for skipping. Allow a certain number of skips for each voter. Surely there are not many pictures that can upset voters enough to not want to deal with it. But a skipped picture should not redisplay untill the voter has finished voting. That way it wouldn't be counted as more than one skip.
After the voter has finished voting and clicked the finish link, they should be able to see and comment on all the pictures.
In the comment field, the photographer should be able to see if it was a comment only or a vote with a comment.
I think that a system like this will help bring up the amount of comments on pictures. If the photographer sees that someone didn't vote on the picture but left a comment only, they wouldn't feel as if the commenter is trying to belittle their picture.
