The opertunity for me to purchase a f707 tommorow has become a reality.I could exchange my olympus c-2100 and get 500.00 in credit wich means i would only have to pay 199.00 for the price diference. I was woundering if anyone can tell me the differencs {in laymens turms} maybe it would be worth it to wait untill i can save more money to get the f717, but from what ive researched so far they are basically the same camera. A little help here please... Thanks, Kevin

Hmmm, can't give you specific numbers or anything, but I think one of the differences has to do with moving images (movie) recording. I think the 717 does a little more in that area.

For what it is worth, I absolutely love my 707 (bought right after they 717s came out). If you want a camera RIGHT NOW, get the 707. It will be worth it, i think.

Go check out //www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydscf717/. This site is by far the best resource for deciding on a camera to buy! They even have a comparison between the two cameras (707/717) that's really good!

I wouldn't spend $300 for the difference to go to the 717...

i went for the 707 also...just not enough differance in the features between the 707 and the 717 to justify the extra $$$

Not having owned a 707 before I got the 717, I can't dispute the opinions of the 707 owners... However, now that I know what a histograph is and does, I'm glad I have one :) Also, I like the ability to shot 5 minute movies since it means I don't have to lug 2 cameras to places I want both stills and movies from... The 32 meg memory stick in place of the 16 meg stick the 707 had is still a joke... Anyone buying either camera should budget for an immediate purchase of a 128 meg stick...

I don't know if the improvement in shutter lag or battery life or ergonomics or white balance that have been talked about by "experts" is a big deal or not since I haven't seen the 707... All I can say is I'm happy with it and would probably spend the extra bucks again if I had it to do over again...

I bought the 717, and mine happens to be on the recall list... sigh....

For a $300 price difference, I just can't see it. The 717 has a couple extra bells and whistles. The one I use most is the hot shoe. (But then I have this leftover monster Sunpak 622 that needs to see use from time time. Boy do they look silly together.)

$300 would buy a lot of memory sticks, add-on lenses, external flash etc.

Had I had that opportunity, I probably would have gone with the 707.

Just my 1 cent worth...

I purchased a Sony 707, Oct. 2002 as my first digital camera, I did check out the 717 could not see the price difference, spent the money on memory sticks, etc. I'm enjoying my 707 very much and highly recommend it.

There are some other differences. I just got the 717. I bought a floor model so I saved a little($800). There is a hot shoe: the 707 was a cold shoe(don't ask me what that is). There is the live histogram which I am beginning to take advantage of. It has one more ISO setting - 800.
Improved AF
Shorter shutter LAG
Faster startup time
Improved AWB
are some other differences according to this site.
The full comparision is located there. They also say that the color saturation has been improved.
By the way, I have been trying it out for a few days now and it seems to blow away my minolta for macros. The minolta was good, but i had a lot of trouble geting the sharpness in low light situations. The Sony does have a drawback of having to be much closer to the subject though. My Minolta's macro was on telephoto only(8 inches away), where the Sony is on wide (can be 1 inch away though) or telephoto ( minimum 35 inches away).
