This will be very new for me, but I'm excited about it. Do you use your own overlays or do you use the dpc textures? Just curious! |

There are tons of resources, flickr, here & just throughout the internet if you do searches for textures. Just make sure if you find something on the web that you're allowed to use it. Another great thing that people forget about is brushes. There are some awesome brushes out there, if you browse through some of my old stuff (here... link) I'm pretty sure there are some links in there. I'll also try to post links as I use stuff. |

DPC has textures? I didn't know that. I'll have to go exploring.

Go to Photos - Galleries and look at the list. There is a textures library, and one just called textures. They don't have the thingy over them so you can use them. You can also contribute your own to the library. |

Thanks Kelli. I found the textures gallery, now I'll look up the textures library.
I do have a brusheezy account. Which brings up another mystery. I had quite a lot of their brushes in my brushes palette (and a couple I made myself) and recently they disappeared. The
original brushes are all there, and even some of the imported ones, but most of them have gone. Ever had that happen?

Only when I switched PS versions. I just had to move them from one to the other.
eta: You could do a search on your computer for ABR files and see if they're floating around somewhere.

I posted an edit, but you posted at the same time so probably missed it... eta: You could do a search on your computer for ABR files and see if they're floating around somewhere.

Thanks Kelli. No ABR files were found when I searched for them. It doesn't really matter because I can round them up again from brusheezy.
Thanks for pointing out that texture library too. Fancy being here nearly 3 years and missing this rich source.

Ok, more dumb questions...do you use the brushes to "brush" certain areas of the shot to add/remove on the layer? I know NONE of this stuff. |

I have a question .. I hope I get an answer please. I am lousy at layers but I would love to learn. In a SC like this, do people share how to do it, give feedback if you ask for it or are you on your own?
I really don't learn well by reading although of course I would read any tutorials and so do my best to grasp the concept.
Also, I would match comment for comment or more but I don't know how much my comments would be worth as I really can't give feedback on the technical difficulty of a photo.
edit because I make so many spelling mistakes :(

yes, in a sc we all help each other learn and hopefully comment as much as we can. You can use either your old or new pictures, make new overlays (tree textures, wall textures, glass block windows...whatever you like) we usually share the textures by putting them in the texture gallery/library, Flickr has a boat load of textures as well. I usually used 3/4 (or more) textures on one picture. this is where I get to use some of those "I can't use it pictures"...maybe because they are a bit to blurry or over saturated....but key is - they are finally usable...*yea* You can even take all kinds of "different elements" from different pictures and combine them into some sci-fi cool picture...the possibilities are endless... |

I haven't been on most of the day so missed this. What you are referring to is a layer mask, and you do use a brush to mask out what you don't want to show. But the brushes I'm referring to are in the forms of shapes, letters, all kinds of stuff. You add them to a blank layer and lower the opacity of the layer to whatever works for the picture. This image has one brush used on it, it's a postcard brush. I made the brush the same size as the image I was working with. |

I will watch with interest and comment occasionally but won't have time to contribute. I like the idea of a subtle overlay :) Pity it is not allowed for DPC challenges. |

Oh boy, things are heating up. I'm bad about explaining how I do stuff because I get really caught up in it, and honestly, I don't always know. LOL But there are those who are very descriptive and good at telling you how they got what they got. I have a ton of textures if anybody wants me to send them some, PM me: Jutilda@aol.com
It's gonna be fun. |

I created a separate file for overlays only...that is where I copy my overlays to from various places like the Texture Library/Flickr or other free web pages....then when I want to make something they are all in one spot... |
