I would like to join in; however, it may only be once a week or month, etc. I have trouble finding the time to practice but I want to learn as I don't have much of a clue about textures, etc. Looking forward to other's contributions and "how-to".

I'm NO teacher...but I've put together this overlay and tried to put my steps in the notes/comments area. If it gets a little "gray" I will try to clarify the confusion (which is sure to follow).

I have Photoshop Elements 8. I've tried to make the notes generic enough for both Photoshop CS/? or Elements. If you have different editing software, I highly suggest looking up on YouTube for your software overlay tutorials...you will be very surprised in what you will find...

anyway here goes nothing...

ETA: I used this YouTube Tutorial

also some overlay textures from Flickr

. .

Sometimes I can't exactly remember what it was I did. That's the main charm of doing overlays & textures--the spontaneous free association of images in my memory, like stream-of-consciousness editing. Occasionally I can see an opportunity to draw something in by hand, which I enjoy very much. I'm very glad Jutilda started this SC & I'm looking forward to seeing what turns out. It's going to be wonderful!

I will often describe what I did to an image, especially the complicated ones like the one below.

If it is a simple blend I'll just show the overlay(s) I used and list the blending mode. I make a lot of my own textures and post them here on DPC.

I don't know much about these side challenges. Would using a camera application on the phone be OK for this?

Anything you can dream up, & share (if possible, especially if you can name that app), we are all here to learn. At least, I know I am.

I use lightroom mainly and Nik Software's stuff, i'm guessing none of this allows me to do layers ?, i didn't really miss it until this thread.

No layers in Lightroom but I have a copy of PSE7 that I don't use as I got CS5 recently. Free to take if interested. Elements are not as powerful as CS5 but do the layers.

Thanks Margaret for the offer but I really only need elements to mess around with this layer thing, I would like to try and keep my PP simple and quick and i can't be bothered to learn a whole new process, I have enjoyed lots of the layered pics I've seen and i might like to try that but expert editing is definitely not for me just yet.

Don't forget you can pop in here when your down, or you can ring if you need anything at all.

I have Elements 8 and love it...I had Elements 7 before...I use it for alot of different layering/masking (there are work arounds that are pretty slick....) jagar let me know if you need any help...happy to do what I can...

Thanks, John! We will be close to Cajarc so we'll see you in late September! In the meantime get over the fear of layers - it is not that difficult!! Just go through a specific tutorial just to overlay textures and forget anything else. It will be a good starting point for your learning curve :)

Helas our timetable is fixed due to flights and accommodation bookings. We'll be in Rocamadour just in time for the balloon festival on 25th September. Oh, well, we are planning another trip to France in 2012 so maybe we'll see you then.
If you would like my copy of PSE7 PM me.

There is another approach which i think may be suitable for which you won't need Photoshop etc, and which i'm going to do, and that is to use the multiple exposure feature in-camera. It makes things a bit more challenging as you need to line things up and keep an eye on the exposure. Also, if your d7000 is like my d300 then there is also a 30sec limit in which to take each shot. This can make for a frantic rushing about as you cram the shots in but it is rewarding when it works. I'm doing my SoFoBoMo book using this method and i made a start a couple of days ago. I'll post up some images in the side challenge as i go on. Here's a handful i've already done...
