Am I missing something?

Freestudies with a 6 word title or is there a theme?
06/29/2011 11:26:27 PM · #2
Tell a story in 6 words that your image supports. They say an image is worth a thousand words and dpchallenge members are the lice of the art world. So, "come ... enter ... the lice are hungry..."

The "six-word memoir" is an interesting (and recent) phenomenon; read about it in wiki.

Here's a link to the Smith Magazine website where they began.

It's an interesting challenge. Not your everyday topic, that's for sure.

Yes, a six word free study.

Okay... I shall keep thinking to try and come up with something original.. :) Thanks!

I wouldn't quite say that it's a free-study, as it seems to be more narrative driven than that. There's a huge relationship between the title and the image that doesn't have to occur in a FS. To me it's less about the "pretty factor" and more about how well that photo tells a story.

It may be along the same lines as a "free study" but you just need to put a bit more thought into it. Every picture tells a story. Make sure that yours does...In 6 words!

personally im looking for the picture to tell me something, im not voting prettiest image, it has to have some sort of story behind it.

i hope others do the same.

I'm so glad we skipped Film Noir so we could rush out this challenge topic as soon as it was suggested.

The fact that you think Film Noir = Low Key just proves how badly we need a Film Noir challenge.

and i took "six word memoir" to be more focused on the "memoir" part and something PERSONAL to YOU, not so much the limit on the number of words. otherwise, we're just getting a bunch of witty phrases that might describe the photo. a "memoir" from Dictionary.com is defined as:

mem·oir [mem-wahr, -wawr]
–noun
1. a record of events written by a person having intimate knowledge of them and based on personal observation.
2. Usually, memoirs.
a. an account of one's personal life and experiences; autobiography.
b. the published record of the proceedings of a group or organization, as of a learned society.
3. a biography or biographical sketch.

so, basically, describe some aspect of your life (or perhaps someone else's life who you are observing) in six words.

i know the "six word memoir" seems to have spread beyond that (based on the info on the website), but it seems to be diluting the uniqueness of the whole concept.

I agree - I feel that the 6 word titles and photos should be based on some sort of memoir theme
06/30/2011 06:57:03 PM · #18
Well, if the six words refer to the picture or not, or if it tells a story or not, it's all good to me. It seems the challenge is based on a website, I'll follow their lead and not try to make it more than what it says it is.

LOL - Mine's in and I'm not going to read another word about who thinks what is what
as to the subject matter and title. And, of course, what they should be.
So, when I get the brown (HA! I will be second to last, naturally)
you can be sure I will have the courage
of my convictions and memoir-writing abilities to keep me secure/insecure.

carry on.
:)

Naturally, since I already have an idea for this one ... ;-)

It's interesting that this is a photography challenge... and it's being scored on the title put upon the photo.

Not sure how I feel about that...

Why is this an issue? One of the perfectly legitimate usages of photography is to *illustrate*. The ability to get words and images working in harmony is a legitimate area of artistic endeavor. It's not like we have to do this thing very often, but some of us LIKE to write-and-shoot — so be happy we get a chance to play unfettered.

I mean, if you look at my entries, you will see LOTS of them where the titles are poetic or expository or some damned, strange mixture, and they usually get hammered for it too, which stings a little. But, hopefully, this is a challenge where i can let my muse escape her confines :-)
