His thoughts certainly fit with street photography and some other genres. I think there may be some topics I enjoy shooting that might not be easy or possible to connect with on a "visceral level" as he puts it. Aviation, for instance. I've not considered it a deep subject, but it is something I love photographing. On the other hand, perhaps it is possible for even that subject. I was surprised to get a very positive feedback from Ubique on this shot, which is not something that I thought he would find interest in:

Would you share what Ubique had to say? I didn't see a comment from him on your shot. Every year, there's big air show near me and it's fun to go and shoot the old style planes. ;-)

It was in a discussion thread for a side challenge. I'll see if I can find it. Unable to find it, sorry. He saw it as more than just a photo of two airplanes, I believe there was a historical significance and a backstory to it that he recognized.

Well, the surprise of capturing an unexpected connection (such as with Ubique) makes that particular image well worth taking not just for the beautiful image itself but for the connection to others. That's awesome!

I've found that though Paul prefers to enter the blurry, moody kind of shots, he has a far wider range of appreciation when looking at others photography.

I completely agree with everything said about Ubique. He sent me one of the nicest messages possible, saying that I should keep going with my photography and generally just encouraging me to keep doing what I'm doing. The kind words spurred me on to stick with it.

Well, we all have our heros...I love all of mine! ::beams::

Back to getting published on 1x...

I'm wondering if it isn't better to shoot specifically for the site as opposed to submitting a re-worked image from DPC. My last submission was about a year ago (which got published...YAY!) but I wasn't something I had previously put here on DPC. Hmmmm..just a thought.

Thats actually my game plan, to shoot for 1x... I just havent had allot of time lately because of work and the baby, so I submitted some older stuff... Which although it was rejected worked out great cause I learned allot of new editing stuff... So hopefully tomorrow I can get out alittle

Well, seeing as how today was Father's day, I ended up spending my whole day with my little man. However, I am off all weekend next week and am spending the night down in the city where I am sure to get some great street shots. I'm really looking forward to it :) and will post results...

Anyway, how is everyone else doing??? Any acceptances or rejections??? I'm 0-3 since starting this thread, but I've learned allot, so we'll see if I can't get one in before its all said and done...

well, i went back to check my account there and the rejection tally.
so far i'm 0 for 28...hehe.

quite some time ago i've accepted the fact that what i shoot isn't 1x material, even though i do believe in my photos and feel some of my things are better than some of the ones that get accepted there.

i'll still try and submit things from time to time but i won't be holding my breath.
: )

Happy Father's Day! I have nothing on the table for 1x. I'm kinda going through a re-thinking process about photography in general and look to 1x as an option to expand and deepen rather than a goal unto itself.

I'm looking forward to your street photos as that's an area I want to explore as well!

Good Luck!

My military entry was just rejected. Big surprise, eh? I'll have to see what else I have that seems 1xish...

I redid the edit a little but still got rejected.
06/22/2011 05:11:43 PM · #165
Got one ready for when I am aloud to enter another. I may use it for freestudies so I am not posting here but I love it whether it get rejected or not.

Well ultimately, all that matters is that you love it :) I feel that way about many of my images. Although I must say that the images that I'm emotionally attached to always seem to fair better, so there is something to be said for that... Good luck

Thanks! :D

I wish I had taken it within the time frame of "Country Music Titles" because I feel like it could have done better than what I am getting but oh well.

I have a feeling that it will be rejected because I have not really had a "great" photo yet. But like I said... I love it still.. Haha!

I love some of my recent photos but I know they are not 1x material so I won't even bother to submit. Love is not enough.

I agree with that love is not always enough. A thought I've been mulling over recently is that an image needs to pulsate with the soul of the subject.

Steve Hill recently wrote to me these words in regard to many of the fascinating characters that he photographs:

"...you start with an idea, of them or what and how you would like to portray them, what attracted you to a subject in the first place and why do you think people...let's say, across the world should see this particular person and begin there...

Images have Soul... or can have a Soul in many different ways. Images can have that something deep inside, that pulsates or at least some do and that's the starting point to connect with educated viewers...1x or wherever. Take truthful images with a pulse that actually mean something to you, the Photographer and the viewers will follow."

Last night, I tried to shoot with this concept in mind and out of 300 photographs...I found three that I liked only very marginally. Really, trying to capture of the energy of a person's pulsating soul within a two dimensional space is just...DIFFICULT.

Creating such an image is lot easier said than done!

::sigh::

Jenn, it is a fine photograph but I don't think it is 1x material. I hope to be proven wrong :)

Me too, I just want to try something different than what I have entered in the past.

I decided to give 1x a break till the technical quality of my photos improves (I am still not there with consistency) and I zoom in on what I really like to photograph. Whether I will ever get anything into 1x I don't know but I will keep on trying in future as it gives me more motivation to improve. Contrary to some opinions I still believe that 1x is full of great photographs and has high artistic standards. It does not mean though that all great artistic photos will get published at 1x! Obviously not so there is an element of chance there. As to the "wax museum" comment from yanko on another thread - I don't have a problem with that :)
