Why do you need inspiration? I'm just submitting some of my favorite shots that I have previously done. It's not like there are any date or editing restrictions at 1x. Next up is my "military" entry, my highest score ever on DPC. I expect the subject will not meet with their artistic sensibilities, and it will get rejected as well.

Good Luck on your latest submission! I will hold in my heart good wishes for publication...;-)

Definitely let us know what happens with that one! I think it's such an excellent image!!

That is what I was thinking... I mean I know for a fact I am not good... Sure maybe "okay" would fit as the word to describe my photographic talent but as shown here in this thread some of the photos on 1x are just "okay."

Marko, these are two that I like from your portfolio.
I'd try for a reshoot with the first one, following the suggestions everyone gave you during the challenge to really make the image and color pop. And pretty much the same for the second one; the light is harsh. It'd be interesting to see softer light in the tree to showcase the texture and interesting appeal it's got. Also, if you are able to get it all to look 'silvery' (if that makes sense), I think it's something that 1x would go for. A reference for such effect would be the image MargaretN linked us to earlier: //1x.com/photo/42379/category/landscape/latest-additions/destiny

That's my 2 cents!

Spiff, I think this image is really 1x material

You SOOOO should submit it... LMAO... I just couldn't resist myself... Anyway, I really like your military image, it definitely has the technicals to get in, but their artistic sensibilities can be tough to predict...

As for me, I may not get out to shoot today because of the weather and my wife is not feeling well, so I went ahead and submitted this variation of my Fine Art 2 shot

I had to drop the border from the shot I submitted so I added the vignette, which I know is too strong, but I really like it, so I went with it... I may try to do some studio stuff later, which I rarely do because I suck at it, but it really is the only way to get better... and since we are discussing it, what do you all think of this shot?

I don't think it would get accepted, but I at least thought it was cool :) it was my second choice...

Oh and one last thing... If you guys wouldn't mind? Since my wife was sick tonight I raided my archives and found this shot which I really like. I don't really see it was a 1x type shot, but I may submit it anyway because I really like it... So I guess my question is, "What could I do to make it better?" I tried to rotate it to make the sink straight, but then the lines were so off with the bed and shelves that it didn't look right. So this was the best I got... Opinions?

Escape from Alcatraz :)

I'm on my phone so I can't see the image at it's best. However I'd do more contrast or dodging and burning to make it a more dramatic setting.

Escape from Alcatraz :)

My idea:
1. the mattress attracts too much attention - blur out the stripes, make it neutral
2. the sink attracts too much attention - darken it to a similar color as the wall so it blends with it
3. full attention should be on the hole in the wall so use a vignette to darken the edges, if you have Viveza Silver Efex it is very quick to change the location of the center of the vignette
Basically emphasize the focal point while treating everything else in the cell as context. The eye should be drawn to the escape route.

PS My rough idea:

What would be better is a different POV - much lower to center the hole and give perspective impact.

Thought of trying this one, which I've never posted on DPC before. View full sized image for all detail. I saved it at the 1x spec of 900 pixels.

06/13/2011 08:23:38 AM · #85
Yeah MargaretN I definitely like the contrast with the darker tones, so I'm going to play with that a little more. Thank you very much for the edit. It really brings out the contrast... I can't really do a different POV, because I live in Florida and that was shot on a trip to San. Fran in Alcatraz. As much as I would love to get out to Sand Fran to do a reshoot :)

Yo_Spiff I think that's a pretty good image for 1x. It has good contrast, is dark, and has really good composition... How did your military image do, have you heard yet?

Have not submitted it yet. I have to wait a couple more days before I can submit another. I did do another resize from the full image to 1x specs. That extra 100 pixels can add a lot of detail.

I just got one published!!

The very first time I tried submitting a photo to 1x, it got accepted (about a year ago). I thought, "hey, this is easy!" About 14 rejected photos later, I found out it really wasn't. Just found out that my second photo was accepted today!

It will probably be another dozen or so rejections before I get my next one published, but I guess this is kind of like golf. At the end of the day, just remember your good shots and forget about the rest!

Has anyone here checked out 500px.com. They have some of the same stuff as 1x but some new stuff as well. It is worth a look.

It is us speaking with our pictures. It is looking at more rather than at less.

Ursula, I read the book this morning on the train. I was surprised that he minimized intuition as "overrated." Intuition draws me to a subject either strongly or not at all. Then, the rest of the process becomes just a love/hate wrestling match with my muse...;-)

I loved the idea that he suggest to study the work of other photographers not with an eye to imitate, but rather with an ear to listen. I love the idea of listening to a masterful photograph.

Anyways, I'm so happy you made this book recommendation. Thanks!

Yay or nay?

I am thinking more on the "nay" side because there is nothing to keep my eye focused on.

Thoughts?

Nay. I think your assessment is fairly accurate.

I figured... I will be shooting another something like this soon... Any tips that are sorta minute that I may have missed?

(Only reason there isn't something else in the photo is because of the challenge I was entering. I wanted to add a large stick or rock to make the image have something else to look at.)

Received a few comments (thank you by the way)...

Revecca - Thanks for the ten! One of 4 that gave me one.

hihosilver - first off... Love the username. Second thank you for the kind words and to respond to "border-less" being the way to go... I have always liked borders on images. I think that borders complete the image. However with that said 1x says no border... Soooooooo, maybe I should lean more towards not having them in the future..?

Wow thanks, at the moment, I am viewing it through the cracked screen on my droid, but it looks fantastic... Would it be too much to throw me a quick list of editing steps? I'm guess a stronger vignette and added contrast... Anything else? Thank you so much for your help...

Well, I agree that borders may add a touch of final polish to an image (depending upon the image), but that border on that image is not entirely a match made in Heaven (IMHO)...;-)

For 1x, you cannot have any borders. Perhaps this particular photo isn't the wisest choice for submission, but a rather pre-cursor or building block to future landscape ideas for submission. ;-)

I say maybe a different angle, or like you said, adding something to the scene so it's not so minimalistic ;) It worked excellent for the challenge, though.
As a sidenote, I happen to not mind the border on this one. -shrug-

It's just curves (Pulled them down) and contrast/brightness with the added effect of a warming photo filter. I did some small dodging and burning (eg. brought out the light reflections on the tap by using dodge on highlight).

Okay UrfaTheGreat here is the edit I did following your steps...

Is this close enough, and is there anything you see that I may have screwed up??? I really would like to send you a 1000 thank you's... So far here is what I have learned.

1.)How to install plug-ins on GIMP (finally forced to look up how to do this to add the warming and cooling filters)
2.)How and when to use a warming and cooling filter
3.)How, when, and why to use a vignette
4.)You can dodge things that reflect light to add contrast, i.e. the faucet...
5.) How to find a vision, and why its important... Great read BTW

Thanks to MargaretN and UrfaTheGreat for there edits and input... This image may get rejected in record time, but I could care less because I have learned SOOOO much, which was really the whole point of this thread. I hope the knowledge keeps flowing... You guys are giving me and everyone else great advice!!!
