I made a mistake when I shot this image that caused the anomoly you see here. What did I do wrong?

What you were thinking ?

Lens hood left on maybe?

Flash with lens hood on, is my guess.

Looks like a finger over the flash to me.

Maybe your hair covered the flash bulb :-)

finger over/ near the flash ? That or a lens hood - it is a pretty sharp shadow, so something close to the flash source.. Did you use the built in flash ? If so, with that L lens, its probably too big/ not enough clearance - you need a drebel...

I got it! You put your new "North Carolina Transportation Museum" hat pin on and didn't realize it was long enough to dangle in front of your flash.

Nice but not very flattering. The mirrored version of her seems to have gained 40lbs :/

The correct answer, indeed, is the on-camera flash with the huge hood from the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 blocking the way. I never use my on-cam flash, but I did today for the first time in quite a while. I should have removed the lens hood or used the 550ex flash to solve the problem. Actually, since a snapshot was the only intent, I should have pulled out the S500 and shot with that, but I already had the 10D around my neck....
