The bright side is that it has scraped it's way up from the 4.6 I saw when I first checked it this morning.

Went up a little, but I feel like it's going to be a struggle. Thought this would be an easy high 5. Wrong-O.

I'm slowly climbing to my prediction of 4.9. (I should really strive to meet my average but what the heck, I'm out of practice.)

edit: disregard the "climbing" part.

A lot of these are just shots with backgrounds, versus negative space. That's the #1 thing I notice.

If you do look at DPC's description for it it's fairly vague saying to have the surrounding space of your main subject enhance the overall photo. That can be interpreted in many ways which is why I think the photos in this challenge are all over the map.

Oh. I thought it was pretty clear - "use the surrounding space of your subject to create the wow of the photograph." Saying the "wow" of the photo should come from the neg space, makes it clear how important a role it plays in the photo. And the challenge is CALLED "negative space" soooo.....use negative space! :p

Edit - I'm realizing I might not be clear about what I'm talking about. I was more talking about the fact that a lot of the photos barely had negative space, but just had a small swish of sky or water, that really only qualified as a background, and nothing more special than that. I think people thought as long as there was a little bit of empty space in the photo, that it automatically qualified as neg space. But from what I understand, that's just a background. Does that make sense?

Negative space, in my understanding, is a composition technique designed to draw your eyes to the important part of an image. The subject of the image should wow the voter. Not the area designed to move the eye.
Least that's how I view it.

Since "opinions" are coming out regarding this challenge subject - here's a couple more to consider (there are tons more on various photography school / learning website):

Using Negative and Open Space in Photography

Minimalism: Using Negative Space In Your Photographs

Have fun! :-)

Hey, there were two threads to discuss this before the deadline... dpc seemed to override the traditional understanding of "negative space" in the challenge description, so that is why the entries are all over the place... it might have been better to have these links as the references for the description so everyone was working from the same understanding

Meanwhile, my great shot is sucking below 5 ;)

My comments rave about the photo and promise scores of 7 and 8.
And all the while my score drops more. Very interesting

I don't think my photo really captures what the challenge is about. I made the perfect photo for this challenge a day before the challenge started (it was a photo shot on the street so you can't really go again and recreate it - and I'm not so fond of the setting things up to take photos. I'm moreover the kind of photographer that tries to capture what she sees)

Today I made another photo that I like better and captures the challenge better. Ah well, there are more important things in life (:

Anyway my score, which is what this topic is about:
