High fours which is a good showing for me.

I had fun voting. I had some real wow moments and not all were the expected "minimalist" approach as was described in a link earlier posted. Negative space and background CAN be the same thing, but not always. It depends. Maybe I'm just more liberal with this one. Got another nice comment, but score still sucking.

Liked it better when it was 6.4 but still holding over 6 so that's good

Meanwhile, my great shot is sucking below 5 ;)

One of the first lessons of my DPC existence was no matter how much it's discussed in a thread, somehow there are a million interpretations of a challenge description...

It seems to me, the more it's discussed beforehand the lower the scores.

Actually, when it's discussed negatively in the "show your vote" threads, the voters react negatively.
hmmm...

Its awesome when I'm reading the message boards at school on my free hour and I step away for a second and find out later my friend was playing with my message : (

I just noticed this. Not looking good. I may have jumped into PH crowd too soon! I need one more 6 before I can do that!

it's amazing the constant downward voting trend. from 25 votes and forward it has done nothing but fall, fall, fall.
03/03/2011 06:01:04 AM · #62

Still falling, mostly. Hoping for it to stay over 5.

Everything is getting scored lower recently. The shoe challenge had 191 entries, yet the top ten when down to 6.2. I've never seen a top 10 that low with that many entries. Batteries is getting hit hard, and puzzle macro was also a lot lower scoring than the previous puzzle macro. Maybe it's the influx of new people with lower voting averages. Maybe people are just getting bored.

Scenario 1: Voters are voting lower
Scenario 2: The overall quality of entries is lower

Scenario 3: So it wasnt the DPL after all that was lowering the votes - LOL

I've been back for three challenges and the voting goes down...must be me!

These two are related and hence there is only one scenario! :)

For the most part, yes...but not necessarily. A low vote may be due to stingy voters (irrespective of picture quality), or you may just have a bad picture. It's easier to blame the voters though..

This is down from 6.18 at 27 votes! My interpretation is that a lot of voters do not understand what Negative Space means. The same happened with the Rule of Thirds. I have seen there photos that had subject cover only one third of the frame (!) With the Negative Space the common thinking must be that more than 50% of the photo should be a blank area with no pattern of any kind allowed. We'll see how many of entries in the under 5.5 range have the literal blank space when the voting is over (excluding the experimenting PH crowd). It should be interesting.

What does the acronym PH stand for?

It was obvious from many of the entries that the concept/understanding of Negative Space was variable. Blank space or lots of open space is not necessarily negative space.

Are you insinuating groups who have unconventional or different interpretations of "negative space" are inverse voting on images with "other" interpretations? What is your evidence of this? It's probably better form to avoid discussing the characteristics of groups of images during the voting period.

To you or to the low scoring voters?

Can only speak for myself and my own basic understanding of this compositional technique.
