This little fellow is in my flower bed...he can't fly yet, and his eyes look terrible. How can I help him? What can I put on his eyes to help them? They look so bad, and I know he can't see. His mother and father are out there, and they swoop down to feed him, but then fly off. I feel so sorry for him! What should I do?

poor baby.
Do you have an extension office or university near you? Call them if you do. They might take him in or give you some good advise. Wonder if hydrogen peroxide would hurt him.
Good luck |

If the parents are feeding him/her then best to just leave it be. The website link Sher posted has excellent advice.

We have both...that's a good idea. I wonder if I can reach anyone on a weekend. I thought about calling a vet, but who knows what that might cost...I saw on the website Sher suggested that you shouldn't use anything but warm water on a bird's eyes, so we are going to try that after the parents feed him again. He keeps chirping and flapping around...it's so sad!

Yes, but the parents are keeping them at bay by dive-bombing them repeatedly...the cats (who belong to my neighbor) have since stopped coming in the yard. My neighbor is also doing her best to keep them home.

Touching the bird will leave scent on the bird and in some species will cause the parents to reject, and stop feeding the baby. Put a fence around it to keep out cats and dogs, and hope th parents can keep it alive, that is the best hope. |

That's usually something parents tell their kid so the kids wont pick it up. Birds dont really have a good sense of smell so the rejection thing is more of an old wives tale.

The Old wives tale is just that for most species, most can't smell well, most won't reject. The one ornathological vet I know won't handle babies without rubber gloves, because the other side of "most" is "some". If you think that your helping the flegling is worth the risk or you are certain that the species here won't reject based on smell, the by all means pick it up.Cornell ornithology"ssite might answer a few questions. They favor finding the nest and putting the bird back in. Good luck |
