I was inspired by the strap-a-tripod-to-your-car pictures and decided I had to try it. So I wrapped my camera in bubble wrap, straped the tripod to the car (which was really easy to my suprise and quite sturdy) and went shooting. It helped having a remote for my camera so I didn't have to get in and out. I took tons of shots but this one was my favorite, please let me know what you think.

Nice job! I think the lighting compliments the car very well.
I've been wanting to try that technique out myself but that would necessitate getting off my lazy bum to wash my car :-o
Pray tell, what did you use to strap your tripod to the car? Better yet, it would be so cool to see a picture of the set-up as I'd like to try and create an image like that with my husband's car. He's REAL touchy about anybody going near it much less strapping something to it!
ed: added word so I wouldn't sound like a hick ;-)

In my excitement I forgot to take a picture of the step up ... but I only needed two little straps. It almost seemed that the tripod was just sticking to the car if you looked quickly. I'm definatelly going take more shots, try different angles and such (after I clean the car as you can tell its dirty). If you want I'll send you a picture of the set-up.
Cheers,
Mike |

I think this is a much better shot than the winner of PT+A. I really don't care for that one, this one is much more compelling. |

Hmmmm....Just a personal note, I'll strap myself to my car before I strap my camera to it! :-P

Considering the way some of our politicians speak, I didn't think that mattered anymore. |

Or even better ! You could get her to hold the camera and you drive around.
I have to admit... I was really scared that I would break my camera, but when I put the tripod on the car it was really really sturdy. I even put the camera in movie mode and drove around and made a wicked looking video. But when I got up to 40km/h I decided not to push my luck and stopped. |

:) Well I might like this one better, but 3's are reserved for photos I can't stand and usually don't meet the challenge.
I may not like your photo, but it definately met the challenge ;)

I was only joking Jadin ;-) Everyone has their own tastes and I understand that subjectivity in aesthetics is as diverse as the people on here. That's what makes this site so great! I learned pretty early that you can't please everyone so I just try to meet the challenges, take pictures I like, and try to have fun doing it! Out of curiosity though, what didn't you like about my picture? I'm very open to suggestions and critique to help improve. |

vs
In yours the colors are cold. There is just the sky and the pavement, with some lights motion blurred in front. The camera is in the rear and the car appears distant. The angle makes me want to rotate the picture. Ideally the camera would be perfectly horizontal with the ground.
In cooliak's the colors are warm. There is the very cool looking curb, which adds a ton to the photo. You also get to see some of the tire tread, since it's turning towards the camera. The angle is closer to what you'd see if you were down that low. Much closer to perfectly horizontal with the ground.
Technically both pictures are pretty much equal, You could say midnight run is over-exposed though, if you look at the real wheel, there is some burn-out in the center of the wheel.
So basically, Midnight Run is cold and disconnected, leaving a lot to be desired as regards angle. Cooliak's photo is warmer. The car is almost turning into the camera itself. It has the very cool looking curb, and is closer to my desired point of view.
I think your photo says to me "hey check out my cool car" where cooliak's says "hey check out my cool photo", and I'm not a person impressed by cars. |

Thanks for taking the time to critique Jadin. Some very well thought-out points you mentioned there. For the "burned-out" portion of my picture, I think that was a result of the environment being much brighter than in cooliak's. The high-polish wheels on the car in my shot vs. the matte silver ones in coolliaks also contributed to more reflection of light. For the "off" angle, I was trying to convey a sense of disorientation that comes with high speed. Like a roller coaster if you will. But I definitely see what you mean. As for the "check out my cool car" comment, I think I tried capturing as much of the car as possible to emphasize the challenge theme of PT&A. It's always interesting to find out others' take on a shot. Thanks again for the input
Anyways, sorry to hijack your thread cooliak. Your shot is awesome and makes me feel like jumping out of the way! This is def a fun shot to attempt and the results are quite impressive. |

I personally like both photos made by two brave souls! And C_town_driver gets an extra point for leading the way while Cooliack gets an extra point for taking a good idea and finding another way to accomplish the task.
But as for Jadin - I was very impressed with your ability to put your thoughts into words so well. Your writing is very clear and easy to follow. HAve you thought about joining the Critique Club? (You should.)

No problem, I hope I didn't sound too harsh. :)
photom - I'm on the critque club :D I'm kind of biding my time until they fix the queue though. Having it setup as Last In, First Out, is counter-productive, and highly irritating. Just when you finish all the photos for a given challenge, more are added to the queue from ones just ending. And you have to do all of those before you can get to older ones. I'm betting the ones at the very beginning of the queue are several months old, if not older. |

I think the ones that are not critiqued when the next [corresponding] challenge ends are just tossed out, but I may be wrong.
