I'll check with hubby to see if we can make it to LA. If not, anyone in CO wanting to GTG for the GGTG weekend?

Let's say, for the sake of argument, weekend of May 21. That means Trollman, Bear, and Penny might make it.

I donno about Trollman, but Bear and Penny are gonna be in the Bay Area, Tahoe, and Carmel/Big Sur for most of the month of May. They are planning to organize up some face-time with fellow DPCers, but they certainly won't be heading down to LA on this trip.

We'll see what happens, I guess.

With all due respect to Fresno, I SURE HOPE NOT!!!

We're talking about LA - which considers itself the center of the Universe, and by extension, of the state. Or the other way around. Whatever. Los Angeles is where it's happening.

Ummm, Johanna? How can you POSSIBLY cxonsider LA "mid-state"? It's nearly as far south as you can go. Even if you leave The northern half of the state out of the equation, "mid-state" would be more like Morro Bay or San Luis Obispo... Now, THAT we could do...

But don't mind me, really :-) I'm just being pedantic. It sounds like a lovely get-together for those urbanically inclined. Penny and I, will be in the sticks, do the wilderness and the cliffs and the mountains, and the estuaries and the bays and so on, with a touch of cosmopolitan thrown in viz San Francisco :-)

Hey, Oakland had an Asian-American mayor two whole months before San Francisco!

But, but.... There's no *there* there...

Bonus points if you understand and can articulate exactly what it was Gertrude Stein was actually saying with that comment :-)

She was referring to visitng her childhood town of Oakland, and being unable to find the house she lived in. (She lived there from the time she was 5 until she was about 17. When she returned 40+ years later, she could not find the house. It was not, as many assume, a dismissal of small towns. Of which, Oakland is not longer one.

I think it was that her family home no longer existed, and so there was no personal, nostalgic "there" to draw her back to that city ...

However, thanks to a committed artist, at least there's now a "Here" there ...

I can't make it to LA but CO is better anyway so yes I could do a CO GTG.

Hmmmmm. SBO! Madonna Inn. Built-in photography ops. And VERY cheap. The wheels are turning.

If it's a dance gala kinda thing, what are those of us without dates to do? Lurk in the bushes and act as paparazzi??

LOL - I've been lurking for a day or two in this exciting thread. LA I cannot do, but San Luis Obisbo (Madonna Inn) yeah, I could try very, very hard to do that one. Weird place and ever so much fun.

The bar alone...but I digress. (And yes, I've seen the main attraction: the waterfall in the little boy's room.)

Well, sweetie and I stayed overnight last fall and it's cheesy as all get-up, but a lot of fun.

@ Melethia, it's not a prom. It's a "gala" dinner, not a formal dance :-) Especially since "gala" has a whole different meaning at Madonna Inn...

If Alice will come, I'll DEFINITELY make the trip. Heck, is there a campsite nearby? I could borrow the bro's motor home and bring the whole SoCal contingent.

There sure as heck is: Montana de Oro State Park just up the road at Morro Bay is FANTASTIC! Coastal park. Have camped there often. Baywood los Osos park ditto.

I'll be in Orlando from May 14th until May 19th. After that I'll head over to the location of the DPC Grand Galla. Doesn't matter much to me which state or city since it'll be a few hours on a plane or two anyway.

Tahoe or Big Sur sounds exciting since I've never been. But I'm easy peasy.

Both those parks are spectacular. Never camped there (my idea of camping is Holiday Inn or better) but day visits have been outstanding.

for those who have never heard of the Madonna Inn, here is the link. Unfortunately, it does not show you exactly how 'over the top' or any other extravagant phrasing you care to use, it is. However, it is a place that makes your jaw drop. I haven't been there in 10-15 years or so, and still remember the place with awe. If they allow cameras on the premises, there could be a field day recording conspicuous consumption. All this said with a huge smile.

Wonderful question to ask - DO they allow cameras?

Madonna Inn, never been, but it sounds like fun. I'm game anywhere in Cali.

They've really put a lot of money into it. There is a whole new building in the back, behind the horse pasture. All the rooms are themed. And there is a gorgeous new spa at the top of the hill. We both ran all over the premises with our cameras, even inside the restaurant (which is rather hallucinogenic - a vomitatious [yet oddly charming] visual riot of Angeline vs. Liberace). People stop here on their way to somewhere else just to take pictures, so I think taking pictures is allowed.

But there is nothing terribly attractive about the property itself. Most of the beauty is a good drive away - about an hour in any direction. Hearst Castle is 40 miles nw - and for anyone who has not been there, an amazing place. But they do have restrictions on cameras, and you can only get in with one of the tours. I highly recommend it anyway. A real glimpse into the glory and excess of another era.

Morro Bay is, of course, only 10 miles away and is a gorgeous for ocean/landscape photography. Plus Bear seems to have his finger far more solidly placed on the pulse of the area than I do.

Regardless, if we get a large enough contingency, I'll put together an itinerary with the input from those attending.

So this may actually HAPPEN at San Luis Obispo? Awesome!

Photographic day-trip opportunities abound. If people are interested in Hearst Castle at San Simeon, that's within easy range of SLO, about 40 miles north, and that's the very southern end of the Big Sur coast, so a taste of Big Sur is easily had. Halfway between Morro Bay and San Simeon is Cambria-by-the-Sea, a wonderful, quaint & charming village with spectacular coastline and secluded inland forests. Morro Bay, as Johanna said, is just a hop and a skip north, and it's great, has a wonderful fishing harbor and a fantastic rock in the ocean, google it and see.

We'll be in Yosemite through the 18th, then if this GTG happens will hop over to Carmel, then drive down the Big Sur coast to SLO at the appropriate time. Returning to Carmel, we'll go up the 101 then cut through Hunter Liggett Military Reservation, visiting Mission San Antonio de Padua, perhaps the best-preserved, least altered of the California Missions, then cut over the Santa Lucias on the Nacimiento Highway (a spectacular, graded dirt highway over the mountains) and thence back to the coast and north again to Carmel...

It's a tough assignment, but we got stuck with it :-)

Well, it is our first SERIOUS contender, Bear. But yeah, it's on the table.

Penny and I are in an enviable position with regards to this, of course: we're already planning to be in the very general vicinity at approximately that time, since at some point we WILL be driving down the entire length of the Big Sur coast at least as far as Cambria...

So, we will see what develops :-)

You big kids have fun. I live very close in California to SLO, but I won't even be 21 yet ;-)
