i think we should have handicaps, determined on the camera.
say, for instance i would be a 36 [only one of mine here]
its obviously a point & shoot.

underpriviledged would get a head start and
the people with the canon d10's? would be penalised.

who else thinks its a brilliant idea?
[only those with point & shoot should reply]

In this ever-growing PC world, I don't think we should use the word "handicap." Maybe we could be "photographic equipment-challenged." LOL

Handicapped on ability would be better:

Professionals
Amateurs
Novices

but since there been some threads that already discuss this matter.

There are quite a few ribbon winners without dSLR's. I'm sure their win is extra sweet because they compete fairly with all kinds of cameras, photographers, and people who live in photographic meccas and still win.

exactly, so what do you think?
[forgot you're one of the others]

its not the equipment, its the photographer that makes a good photo, so I would have to say no to this.

just because I have a good camera does not mean the camera takes good pictures. I have to control the camera just as you do with your camera.

Granted mine has more functions, but if I cant control it what good is it?

Most of Sonifo's best shots were with her DSC-S70. There's a lot more to taking great photos than the equipment. And read the interview with Jacko for a little inspiration - he's been extremely successful, but isn't really an "old hand" at photography.

Various versions of this idea come up from time to time, but I don't think they get a lot of support.

I just posted a response to this thread but it disappeared into cyber space, so I'll try again. The problem with an equipment handicap for me is this: while I do have a nice, brand spanking new 300D, I also face a helluva learning curve, and so far, most of my images are far worse than what I was producing on my Canon Powershot A70. I would have to vote no...

Note to self: Check the ISO! Check the ISO! Check the ISO!

which camera did you use for choices Gary?

Um, well, the 300D. But I got lucky! ;-)

So, if implemented, just what do you envision this handicap affecting?

Yeah, if you say anything else, you'll start to get bad comments, too.

It's not the camera that makes the picture it is the photographer behind the camera. My sony cyber shot won all the ribbons I have. I haven't even come close to a ribbon yet with my Rebel.

You need to know how to use the camera. Read up on the settings. Use the settings to help you out. Be more creative with the composition.

Go ahead check out my ribbon shots. Really, just point and shoot pictures.

I don't think that would be a wise thing to do, that would open up a whole can of worms, then as was once suggested we would have to consider physcial handicap.
I am 70 yrs old when I joined the group I read the requirements and accepted them. At 70 it would be unwise for me to do some of the things
that you younger people do to get a picture, This I have to accept just as I have to accept that my Sony F717 won't do some things that other cameras do even through I can get better pictures with it than I did with my HP618.
The way I see it it is up to the owners to set the rules and if I don't like them I don't have to be a part of this group.
No I have never had a hig score 5.3 being my highestbut I have improved and learned a lot and that is what I'm here for.
