This would've been a prospective entry to "Extraordinary" but probably would've done poorly. It was also layered and gaussian blurred (since I sold my soft filter) so it wouldn't be legal for an open challenge anyway.
Was going for humor with this shot, rather than a technically well lit portrait. Instead, I'm using it as a selfportrait entry in a photochallenge on another website.
Yes, the bee is real. No, it's not alive. I found it on Monday when I was hiking. Picked it up and put it in a pocket on my backpack. Didn't take him out till Thursday. He was a little smashed and about 10 ants came fleeing out of its backside when I was about to place it on my nose. Kind of gave me the creeps!
Took about 10 tries to get a shot I was happy with.
Enjoy.. or not.

When it was freshly dead/still dying on monday, I was so scared to pick it up or place it on my face.. the legs were still moving! |

That is just almost too twisted...you have a lot of guts, whether that bee is alive or dead!! ;o) Great shot BTW...I love the angle and your expression is priceless!!!

This study has good impact. It is entertaining and a well executed idea. |

:D
I knew in order to pull a shot off like this, I'd need to tilt my head back so the bridge of my nose would be horizontal.. otherwise, the bee would just fall off and trust me.. it did MANY times.
With head tilted back, I held the camera directly above me and aimed a little forward (almost a 45°) as to get the correct angle of looking down. Cropped out the floor and most of the wall I was leaning against. |

Here's a much less terrifying bee for you...
