I just tried out Kodak's new Ultima Picture Paper that is supposed to be able to look great for a hundred years. I used the satin finish and it looks great but I'm wondering if they will really last over a hundred years. I want to use it for my digital art because if I can print the 8x10's at home then I have better control of the color and this paper looks very promising. Are we there yet technology wise to make ink jets last that long or is this just a marketing ploy. Who else has tried this paper and what do you think?

Depends more on the ink than the paper from what I understand - though both play a part. Dye vs pigment inks and so on.

Also consider storage - most of these '100 year' ratings, are for images under controlled lighting conditions - no sunlight/ natural light, often stored in the dark/ in a folio or at least under glass and in temperature/ humidity controlled conditions too.

Yuh, I was gonna say what Gordon said. If you store it wrapped in an airtight envelope or something, with no humidity, no extreme temperatures, then 100 years from now you pull it out to look at it, it should still look great. If you have it well framed and hang it on a wall in a normal room somewhere, I'm betting that, in a couple of years, if you had a fresh printout to compare it to, you'd see some fading.

Yeah, I understand all of that, and I agree, but this particular paper from Kodak claims that it can last over a hundred years without any special treatment or protection with all compatable inkjet printers. They are the first company to make this kind of claim with their paper that has the new ColorLast technology. It sounds pretty fantastic to me but I thought, even if they look good for only fifty years then there is a pretty good chance that I will be dead before my customers start complaining :)

Xerox is now selling a Phaser 8400 solid ink ink-jet printer. Rated at 21 ppm b&w and 10 ppm for full color images up to 8x10. I've seen some sample prints that look terrific. TCO is about USD 0.03 (3 cents) per image.

Has anyone used one? Anyone with an informed opinion?
