Thanks, jminso. I appreciate it. I might call on you :)

& the original

I'd like to start with this image, it's representative of the kind of blurred fork shots I've been doing, which get a vote of 4.8x indicating Needs Work. I can start re-shooting tonight.

Suggestion to posters: If you put the image in your workshop, people can easily copy them in order to play with them in photoshop (or program of choice)

:D

What format should we upload? I shoot raw and convert to dng but, obviously, can upload any format. Should we just keep it jpeg for uniformity?

Also, does size matter?

I would say yes to JPG, but if someone wants to see your RAW, there are many online file transfer services that can by used. I like yousendit.com. They will put the file online for a week or 100 downloads, and then you just take the link and post it or e-mail it.

If you can afford the space in your workshop full size images definitely do matter.. We can clearly work with anything, but a nice big .jpg will help us produce better advice, as we can see the flaws and the strengths much better at full resolution.

I'd say if you are posting an original for someone else to edit, then as large as you have portfolio space to accommodate. The just delete them when no longer needed.

Can we crash someone else's comments? Or are we only allowed in our assigned slots?

Crash away. I'm sure all feedback will be welcomed.

Gee, I didn't think of all these details! I need an FAQ!

Heh...don't blame them. I've been trying to go camping again up at the Cape and sneak away for a GtG, but with the kids, (friend's too) we've been going more local.

Here is my first shot for here. First major problem I see is it seems the focus point is on her hand and not her face. In my excitement to try out my new softbox I may have been a little quick with my settings. But besides that I think this is a good first shot for here, it is my favorite pose out of the shots I took tonight. Anyone feel free to comment.

Here is the unedited large size

eta:

Lighting was a 430ex in an apollo 28" softbox just out of the frame camera left, angled down and at a 45 degree angle to camera. Also had a 430ex II camera right with diffuser cap. Again at a 45 degree angle.

Hey Josh, (Joshua?)
I think that your perspective on this shot helps it. I have seen too many "kid" shots, where the child is looking UP at the lens because the photographer didn't get down to their level. Whenever I'm about to take photos of the kids, my wife always gets a kick out of my crawling on the ground on my belly to shoot.

How does this edit compare? vawendy Left me a comment and it was something I really didn't even notice until I did some more adjustments and I think it really helped. Thoughts?

Josh or Joshua is fine. Yeah perspective was one of the first and best tips I have ever received and I often find myself crawling around lol. Well worth it though in the end.

Not a bad idea. At this point, I am working with Justcaree

and ur my only one... you poor thing... no idea what to do or start with.

I might start with:

Alex Europa commented on it and said: "You shot this at f/25 for a Bokeh challenge? You would have placed MUCH higher if you had dropped your aperture to that len's largest of f/3.5 (or f5.6 if you were zoomed in to take this shot). That would have caused the background to be much more out of focus and made your subject stand out much more. The focus is nice, but the image is too dark, at least it is on my monitor. Have a look at the histogram and see where the bell curve falls, if it's too far to the left, then the image is too dark"

I think he's very right, and I'll reshoot this weekend and repost.

Also, does anyone know if there's a plugin for firefox or something whereby you can do something and the colour spectrum of a photo pops up? It'd be really handy for quickly looking at spectra during voting, reviewing, sub-clubbing, etc.

Here's one
Firefox Histogram plugin
I don't use it, so can't attest to it.

ETA: The same developer created This Color Inspector as well, which is sorta interesting too.

Beautiful :) I searched and failed to find anything and resigned myself to writing my own.
Thanks, Spatula!

Are we allowed use this sub-club to better the entries we are planning to submit into current challenges?
07/02/2010 05:26:14 PM · #48
My opinion is no, since this is a public forum. Perhaps, that is better for the 1:1 with the mentor.

Watch yer PMs so, Mentor (capital m!).

Ok, here is the shot I like, but to me it looks blurry. My edited version needs cropped, but now sure how much. Was thinking to take off the left cow.

Here is the original jpg.

I often over noise reduce and over sharpen my shots, giving it a blurry look. I think I ruin more than actually start out bad!!!

Do we email our mentors with these shots or how is this working? I need to shoot something better, lol. (But, the way the spotted one charged the fence, I'm not sure I WANT to go back and reshoot if necessary. The pawing at the ground was a little unnerving as well!!! (Maybe I should choose another of the shots. ~ SH*t!
