I got that comment too! Shame on me for foisting such a mediocre image on that viewer--apparently, I'm cold and heartless for not thinking of his sensibilities. I feel so inferior to his great wisdom. (But at least I'm not alone....)

What were you thinking... Now get back in that box.

Hopefully three isn't a crowd cause I got that one too.

What exactly do you mean by desaturation with colorization?

Sorry: I am new here and still learning this forum thing.
The object is to start with a full color image. Do all the corrections and then select the areas you intend on keeping. Desaturate the remainer so the end result is the original color against the desarurated background. Many entries have desaturated and then colorized.

wow. for a while I felt much better reading this thread. I've been depressed all day for my 4.5, but now it doesn't seem so bad. So for a few minutes I was really glad.

But.... I did not receive the "what where you thinking" comment. I think that is a bad sign, isn't it?

Damn... depressed again. I hope this dude still comes around to ask me what i was thinking...

Sorry to hear that other people are getting low scores. I've turned off my scores so I don't have to get upset. Just before they were shut off I had a 4.1. And no, I didn't mess around with the colors except for the desaturation part.
06/21/2004 03:27:29 PM · #31
I don't really mind about changed colors. Although when it looks really unnatural and 'shopped, I rate lower. But by rating I specificly looked for the function of the desatuarion. I think the highlighting/desaturation has to add something to the picture, give it a new meaning or outlook. If it doesn't, I rate it lower.

btw, my lowest in this challenge was 5. I never go below 4 and give 4's only when it doesn't meet the challenge at all, or is a really technically bad picture.

Is there nobody here that scores over a 6, or are only the "low scorers" speaking out?
I would find it verys strange if it turns out that the winner would score 5.6 or so, ive seen some very good entry's....
06/21/2004 03:42:54 PM · #33
The average quality of the shot in this round seem to be higher than the usual, so if the scores are lower I would guess that it is because many of the voters don't care for the technique required by the challenge. At least we have no " does not meet the challenge" complaints.
06/21/2004 03:52:37 PM · #34
Well I've seen 1 "does not meet the challenge" and a few who misunderstood I guess...

I am commenting now on a lot of photo's, so if you see you comments go up by one.. That would be me.. Don't shoot me, I'm trying to be nice...

oe laurielblack, that will be a top10 for sure

I got some "didn't meet the challenge" as well. Although I don't understand why.

philos. good of you to comment. I will try to make a lot of comments as well. It always helps a lot to see people thought something, even when it's negative.

Well i've stopped for now, got silly and posted 2 silly comments.
So I go to bed now and go on tomorow...

theres a big split in this challenge- either really good or failed miserably it seems. I have given some real high scores.
06/21/2004 04:21:47 PM · #43
I also was hit between the eyes with, what I though was, a lower than deserved score of 4.1 last night. Suddenly, this afternoon, it's up to 4.5. First time my score has gone up instead of down.

My PT&A started at 6.3 and dropped to 5.1 by the next morning. That's more what I am use to seeing.

I feel better now that I have read this thread. My Selective Desat entry received the "what were you thinking?" comments as well... and the comment "If the shot was boring in color, what makes you think it would be better in B&W". HARSH. Very harsh.

I interpretted this challenge as taking a photo and selecting areas to leave in color, the rest to be B&W. I worked many hours learning how to do this skill, having never done this before.. so for that reason.. I thank you all for the opportunity to learn this.. but I guess no one could comment about the amount of work that went into the effort. But... I learned a new skill, and that's OK.

But, more importantly, the other thing that I have "taken away" from dpchallenge is the reminder of how to be a good teacher. If I ridiculed my students the way some of the people here do so, my students certainly would be turned off. I can just imagine it.... "why did you do that? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?" My student would be demoralized and dishearted to learn more. I am reminded that, instead, I would say to the student.. "well, OK.... I see what you were trying to do. How about if you try to do this the next time, and let's try it again".

So... thanks to DPCHALLENGE... for reminding me how to be a nicer human being.

Responding to galimages. I agree with you and wonder who is the Guru who carries such a chip on his/her shoulder by lashing out. I do not think it helps those trying to learn to insult them. But we do have people who know it all and are insulted that many of us are not up to their supposed speed. This has been a hard challenge for many people because there is a mis-understanding which I pointed out earlier, but how conceited can one be to insult. These are people who simply enjoy the common feeling of being right and confuse the feeling with their self importance.

Are the harsh comments you refer to from a person with no camera? (I have a harsh one too - just curious.)

Agreed! I received a "So what" comment on my choices photo today. Tell me my depth of field is off, or that I might try cropping the photo slightly to the left, something I can learn from. But "So what" or "What were you thinking?" isn't helpful and isn't what I think the goal of this site is about. The one thing I did notice is that the person leaving behind the not so helpful comment hasn't had the balls to but his photos out for public viewing even though he's been a member for a while. It's easy to sit in judgment when your hiding your own work.
