OK. So I entered DPChallenge for the first time. After 43 votes, I scored 4.6047 average. Is it good or bad ? |

I'm submitting my second photo, and I have the exact same score after the same amount of votes.
Congrats us!!
But no, it's not great...

First of all welcome, and a warning: this is an addictive site. Don't let this score stop you from entering challenges.
It depends on how you look at it. If you were aiming for a top twenty finish, then it is bad. If you liked your submission more than what other people think, then it's good. But really, the first few submissions should be a learning process ... DPCers tastes are quite quirky and it takes a little bit of time participating before one is able to 'get' what the audience here likes and scores high :-) ... eg flying motorcycles, macro of bugs, eyes and frogs :-).

I'd say that's probably about or above average for a first entry, and a little ahead of my current entry. :)
The disadvantage is that scores in this range often tend to garner few comments, even though they are perhaps more deseerving than the very good and very bad ones which may get more.
Some people discussed their first entries in this thread. |

I agree 100%. Althought it's sometimes dissapointing that my shots haven't gone above 6.0 in some time, I've learned that I'm very happy with my pictures despite the scores. Most of the people that I show my pictures to love them and ask for prints all the time. It's only here on DPC that my shots are "okay" at best.
I have my own style and I'm sticking to it. I hope you find your style and do the same AndrewTO.

It's right near where my last two have finished. I've had several finish lower, some higher. It's all part of the fun! ;o)

Well than I am doing not so bad on my 1st
Votes: 46
Avg Vote: 4.9783
When I score above 5 I can buy my Digital Rebel my wife said.
So I realy hope that my score will get a litle bit higher.
I voted for every single one in this challenge allready and seen a few very nice ones, so I don't mind that I don't get the 10's
I'm happy with the few comments I get!
Oh, before I forget, I came here because I want to improve myself, to learn as much as possible

Thank you for the welcome. That DPC is addictive, I know. I have been frequent visitor and have been voting for quite some time. Now finally I decided to throw my hat in and I know there will be more entries of mine in the future.
As to the score, sure I would like to score high. If I don't, not a big deal. I like my photo, I hope to learn from constructive comments and have fun along the way. Cheers ! |

After 46 votes, my score is 4.67
It's fairly abstract, so I was expecting the DPC play-it-safe crowd not to be too generous, but this is even lower than I was expecting.
My wife likes it though, and she is usually a good judge of quality. |

Smiling...
My score is 4.5 after 46 votes, and what you say about your entry is pretty much what I could add about mine, although...
I was warned and advised to submit something cute with no other attributes but meeting the challenge. She's right, of course, but so am I for not doing it. ;-)
The image bears an intellectually challenging and in-depth critique though, which is "Huh?"

Well just to add this:
I voted 7 for 3 pictures.
6 for 11 the rest is al below 6.
To compare I had 2 10's in the TP&A Challenge and 2 9's in the Choices challenge...
So maybe everybody is voting low, maybe I am voting lower because I am in this cahllenge, dont know.... (I dont believe I did vote lower because of that) |

I am at 4.2 for the choices challenge. This is my highest rating so far! I am satisfied. I don't claim to be a professional or even know what I'm doing. But alot of people like my work in general..I guess that's why they purchase it through my website. Anyway, I've noticed that if the picture isn't perfect, people tend to vote very low. My opinion for the choices one definitly wasn't anything like anybody elses.
....
Anyway..your score is higher than mine.

Congrats! I agree, this site is very addictive! The nice thing about
this site is that there are people who are more than happy to help you
become a better photographer. My first venture netted me a 5.075, which I
was more than pleased with. My second entry received 6.066 and Iam totally
amazed! Now I know that I can reach the top, eventually! Hang in there
and have fun. I can't say enough about this site and it's memebers,
good people. |

I cannot believe it. 49 votes and 4.6735, the last vote definitely was a 9. Nice surprise. |

I am glad you know that you want to keep your style and not just worry about points. BUt I just looked at your profile, and you are by no means doing shabby with the DPC'ers either!!!! I think it tells you that you are a very gifted photographer.

I never thought entering a challenge could be so exiting...
From the moment I woke up I am checking my ratings :)
This afternoon at my work I was going down down down, starting at a nice 5.6 (2 votes) to a low of 4.6, I was depressed, realy...
Then I recieved a comment "Nice work", that made my day again.
Now I come home and I am going up up up, almost at 5.1
Hehehe it is fun being a 34 year old child :) |

I agree, based on my experience as both a voter and a challenger, comments tend to go to the low and high, with fewer doled out in the middle, where they are the most useful. I have been aiming to comment more on ones I feel could have been improved with a specific direction or change, rather than commenting on the truly superior or abysmmal ones.
I am only running in the 3.3 range for my first challenge, but I think my headline submission is a much superior shot, so wish me luck (and the same to all of your submissions!). |

I hope you will do well in this and subsequent challenges. I just got home from the office and the first thing I did is check my score. Adter 64 votes I am still above 4.7 average, so I guess that's not bad for the first entry. I wish I received more comments, the ones that I did receive are very positive and encouraging. I think I will keep on entering the challenges. I already have a few candidates for the June study challenge. Cheers ! |

5.53 after 73 votes...I'll probably end up around that. I'd taken a break for about 6 weeks and have started submitting again and I'm at my usual average. I like my picture...so that's what's important and the comments. Leave some comments guys and gals!! I got only 3 so far.

Hehe, I wondered the same thing on my first entry for the rusted challenge. Turns out it scored low because...
a) the picture kinda stunk
b) it required a microscope to view since I posted it so small :D
