I'm likely to be taking some trips to a view reasonably photogenic places this year (Tetons, Yellowstone & Death Valley) and I'm wondering about the best way to transport a tripod.

My lowepro backpack will fit as a carry-on, so my camera/ lenses are good, but I assume I can't carry on a carbon fibre tripod with leg spikes (seems like a candidate for a weapon)

Is this something that would really need a hard case to travel well, or just packed in to a duffle bag ?

Any experiences with getting gear like this through an airport, in a relatively reliable, damage free and cheap way ?

I wanted to know the same thing before my trip to New Orleans so I called United and asked. They said as long as it fits inside the carry-on it's fine. If that's the case, I would presume that it would also be perfectly ok to pack it in your check-in baggage. FYI, I had my Manfrotto 718SHB tripod with me.

Unfortunately this tripod won't fit inside a carry-on bag, nor in my usual checked baggage. Even without the head removed.
Sorry - forgot to mention that.

I guess I could buy a larger suitcase...

I would pack it in a carton ( box ) with some bubble wrap and check it with my bags.

I have the lowepro (mini?) trekker bag (with tripod flap). I haven't had a problem with it as a carry-on (with tripod attached).

My new Manfrotto 3001 tripod won't fit in my carry on bag either even with the head removed. I need to find a bag that's longer so I can bring it with me on vacation later on this summer. Or I just need to get a suitcase.

just put in your suitcase, they will no longer let you carry on a tripod.

Gordon....Flash here...

I have always packed mine in my checked duffel. I probably pack more items and consequently likely utilyze a larger bag, but my tri's and mono always go into the checked bag. Whether Florida, Ireland or Texas. My camera bodies, lenses, film, cards, storage medium, etc....always are in my shoulder bag as a carry on. My legs are in the checked luggage.

Hope this helps.

I carried my tripod on in a long narrow stuff sack that I borrowed from one of those collapsible camping chairs. I had no problems.

It may be worthwhile to contact the airline in advance and ask about carrying it on.

I drive and have no problems :-)

But tripod in a lugage will be subject of constant searches because on the X-ray eill always look like something else !

Outside the US, I haven't had any trouble carrying on my Manfrotto 190 with the head removed and the whole kit tucked into my suit bag. Over the last two weeks, I have done this at the Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taipei international terminals, and previously had no problems at Beijing, Shanghai or Guilen.

On the way to the US, I check the legs and head in the main luggage. My lenses and body are in my backpack, subject to xray, and frequently get examined by hand in the US, so, law of averages says to me that eventually, legs as carry on will be a problem in a US airport for at least one of the security guys.
