Dark and grainy doesn't have to be weird. Dark sets the mood and the amount of grain enhances it. Yes, these affects can be taken too far like anything else. There were a few B&W photos in recent challenges that were quite grainy however the graininess added to the mood. (IMO)

I think it may help us to gain different skills than just the technical ones that are easier to learn here. Just a thought. |
I will do this if no one else has already...

We are more concerned with details of technical matters, but don't discuss what the intent of the communication is and if the photographer/artist accomplished his/her intents through the use of the technical.
What do you think is the communication intended in the best of show photograph and how was it accomplished? Why do you think it won over the others?(for anyone to answer) Personally, my favorite in the International Fine Arts Exhibition is the Staircase in the Museum shot.

Definitely would not have been over a 5 here. Again it is subjective, and the juror read alot into what is means (again, my opinion). | |
The communication intended for the best of show Male Torso is in the lines of the main subject. it was accomplished by using the main subject 3 different ways. I think that the lines, softness in the skin of the subject isnt really a male. The lines make me read into it and assume that maybe its a female and that females can do the same things as males. We have some of the same lines. Maybe it was chosen best of show because its a readable composition and makes people think like what was said by the dean in the NY time article. Photography makes us think.
School trains kids to prepare for the workplace and how to be an adult.
College trains people to do a skill or be diverse and have more capabilities.
Dpc is a big part of training to become better as a professional or be prepared as well as kept informed of new upgraded equipment. Its also a place where we can express ourselves be creative and accept new things. Art is defanetly a part if it. Exibits may just be the same as school, classes in college, or communities like DPC. The winners in all challenges are chosen from someone judging the same as the jurors for exhibits. Its all different opinions and it makes us think.
I have always liked art specially sculptures and paintings. I have my own pieces that I created from high school and some on my own. It wasnt until 1999, when I visited SanDiego California on a trip ,I won with Surge, that I accepted photography as a form of media. I had a camera that was only point and shoot but the many things that I wanted to remember a certain way or how I looked at everything was so eye opening. I looked at everything as if I were burning it or burning what I was looking at with my eyes. I really had a thing for the paintings that were on the walls of hotels, restaraunts, or buildings and walls, it made me think and want to continue my art. I also discovered that my photos I took of buildings, trees, landscape, and the places I visited brought out my enthusiasm of art. That is the year my dad gave me a camera that belonged to my grandpa. And I also wanted to change my degree from business managemnt to graphic design.
I had to take a break from school when I became a mom, but that doesnt stop me from learning or being a artist and a photographer.
"Its all in how you think."
Dpc is apart of the internet and the internet is like a window to the world. The world communicates through it. Visual images tell stories like words. Images come from cameras or other media. I believe photography is art indeed!

Perhaps this is an overly simplistic thought, but I'd not underestimate the effect of "print" vs "300 different monitors" in a discussion of DPC vs Exhibition... I would venture to say that at an exhibition, every judge sees the photo as it was meant to be seen. At DPC, many judges see the photo as intended, but I'd bet the majority have calibration issues that would make the photographer being judged cringe.
